Applied Research Associates, Inc. (ARA) is seeking a driven and talented computational or experimental physicist, engineer or mathematician to develop computational algorithms for the modeling of and simulation of advanced and complex systems spanning the fields of electromagnetics, plasma physics, and quantum systems. A demonstrated background in computational algorithm development in C/C++, FORTRAN, and/or Python for the fast and accurate solution of differential and/or integral equation applications is required.  A background in computational electromagnetics, computational fluid dynamics and/or quantum computing/information is strongly desired. This position will be based out of either our office in Columbus, OH or Dayton, OH.

The successful candidate will work on

  1. Building a portfolio of quantum computing or quantum inspired solutions for complex problems ranging from radar sensing and signal processing to optimization and numerical algebra
  2. Solving finite element and integral equation problems for the modeling of complex numerical phenomena.
  3. Researching potential algorithms, spanning the fields of quantum computing, modeling, numerical simulation and machine learning, implementing them in code, testing their efficiency and making continuing improvements where appropriate.
  4. Leading R&D business development activities in the area of quantum computing, including authoring proposals, RFI responses and opportunity initiation.

An extensive programming proficiency in C++, FORTRAN, and/or Python in a Linux/Unix environment is required. Experience with source code version control tools such as Git and continuous software integration such as GitLab is preferred. The candidate will require experience running large-scale parallel first principles codes that implement numerical solutions to differential equations; this experience should be broad-based and include finite element and boundary integral equations.

What you’ll do as a Senior Computational Scientist:

  • Lead or participate in algorithm and software development projects for computational electromagnetics and/or quantum computing, software validation and verification, and R&D efforts.
    • R&D/implementation of algorithms for electromagnetics and multi-physics problems
    • Work with a unique group of highly skilled and experienced mathematicians, physicists, RF/antennas engineers, and computer scientists to solve complex, large-scale computational problems.

Requirements for a Senior Computational Scientist:

  • Ph.D.  in Physics, Mathematics and/or Engineering with a focus on computational electromagnetics, physics, quantum computing/information, fluid mechanics and/or mechanics.
  • Demonstrated experience in advanced computational methods – such as Galerkin methods, vector finite elements, integral equations, numerical algebra, Multi-level Fast Multipole Methods, neural networks, quantum algorithms etc.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience developing C/C++ and/or Python software for scientific applications
  • Demonstrated experience in developing computational algorithms from first principles.
  • Proactive, problem-solving mentality
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills: ability to clearly articulate progress or tasks in technical reports and develop technical presentations.
  • Requires little supervision in developing a milestone schedule or work plan to achieve the final task objectives in a timely manner.

Preferences for a Senior Computational Scientist:

  • 2-3 years of experience working in the development of quantum algorithms, methods or techniques for applications in the computational sciences.
  • Deep working knowledge of numerical algebra, linear algebra and matrix manipulation.
  • Experience with machine learning or neural network-based solutions to complex engineering problems
  • Working familiarity with Linux.
  • Experience with parallel processing and high-performance computers (HPC).
