Lead Data Engineer

Position:  R2-R3, Manufacturing and Quality IT

Position Description:

The Digital Quality Assurance systems Tech@Lilly team delivers and maintains applications that support the Digital Quality Assurance systems organizations at Lilly. This team is part of the broader Manufacturing and Quality (M&Q) Tech@Lilly organization that continues to transform as we look to the digital plant of the future and support manufacturing operational excellence and productivity efforts maximizing the use of technology and analytics. Significant investment and usage of data and analytics in the making of medicine is occurring where capabilities from simple visualizations to predictive and prescriptive analytics and machine learning are rapidly emerging across the global manufacturing landscape.

 

The Digital Quality Assurance systems Tech@Lilly team works in partnership with the Global Quality business central and site representatives to define business needs and provide solutions for Manufacturing Quality.  This team is responsible for the support and solution delivery of IT tools that support the Global Quality business application portfolio, such as Veeva QMS, TrackWise, QMS Integrations, data and analytics solutions.

 

A key role in the Digital Quality Assurance systems organization is the Lead Data Engineer position.  The Lead Data Engineer will have primary responsibility for conceptual and physical data modeling, data analysis and design, data analytics, Integrations, AI/ML, data visualizations and assist in the definition and implementation of information management capabilities for the Global Quality.

 

Key Objectives/Deliverables:

  • Assist Business Process Architects in gathering business rules and requirements.

  • Partner with subject matter experts to deliver data visualization solutions to drive business decisions and performance monitoring.

  • Lead a technical team of 5-6 data engineers/AI-ML Engineers/BI developers.

  • Develop conceptual data models / logical data models based on the business rules and requirements including data flow diagrams (understanding the data elements, cardinality, etc), building data pipelines (ETL/ELT/Virtualization/API).

  • Influence and/or leverage common terminology and standard naming conventions/definitions for data objects

  • Work with subject matter expert to develop Logical Data Marts (within solutions like Mulesoft, Informatica, Denodo, Power BI) for data reporting and visualization.

  • Lead definition and implementation of information management capabilities, such as meta data management, master data management, and a data catalog

  • Analyze and assess the impact of system changes to the logical and physical data models. Work with application teams and not drive the changes in source applications.

  • Work with application teams to develop and optimize queries from databases/APIs to meet business and technical requirements (Example: Work with TrackWise team or any other application teams in QLTS)

  • Collaborate closely with DIA(Data integration and Analytics) MQ Tech@Lilly team for downstream data consumption and reporting needs.

  • Partner with cross-functional tech@Lilly teams for effectively deriving the technology solutions.

  • Assist in data acquisition, data preparation, and data publishing for QA IT assets.

  • Involvement in System Validation, collaboration with CSQA on validation strategy.

  • Assist in integration testing across all endpoints of our QA data assets.

  • Represent Global Quality Tech@Lilly in broader data governance and information management forums within the M&Q organization and enterprise.

  • Influence data analytics opportunities to surface data across our assets and deliver valuable insights.

  • Optional/Additional Skills: Participate in strategic conversations in how to leverage AI and Machine Learning capabilities to drive additional productivity and operational gains.

  • Be an active learner. Stay abreast of tools and technologies to influence IT strategy so that it provides best usage opportunities for business.

  • Ensure compliance to Lilly privacy and security standards and Quality rules.

  • Drive our data classification and categorization efforts for IT assets and champion these decisions.

  • Partner with Business Process Architects, third party solution delivery providers, and Solution Architect to review and approve integration test scripts, and review and approve test output.

 

Basic Requirements:

  • Minimum 7 years of work experience Engineering or Technical background.

  • At least 7-10 years’ experience working with Integration/ETL/API Technologies like Mulesoft, Informatica, database technologies (On premises/Cloud), PL/SQL, database modeling, Oracle/AWS/Azure, Denodo, Redshift, Postgres, (being able to navigate a DB and propose optimization wherever needed)

  • Data profiling skills are required to explore and understand a new source. (Example: Be more domain centric, understand the entity relationship, understand business data and map to the relevant relationships)

  • Good understanding of System integration Architecture, data architecture, data governance.

  • Provide guidance on technical solutions, perform POCs and lead the team in right technical direction.

  • Expertise with analytics/business intelligence solutions (Power BI).

  • Experience on Microsoft Power Platform/Microsoft Fabric (Power BI, Power Automate, Power Apps)

  • Strong SQL development skills (Example: May be experience with tools like SQL Developer/ TOAD or any other tool)

  • Experience/Literacy on latest AI/ML, LLM technologies (Open AI, Bedrock, Claude).

  • Strong Data literacy, such as knowledge of data modeling concepts (i.e., cardinality, aggregation, etc.), data architectures for info integration, data visualization, & data warehousing

  • Ability to work with business owners to define key business requirements and convert to technical and data specifications.

  • Expertise in the design, data modeling creation, security, and management of data models

  • Experience working in GxP regulated environments and complying with internal computer systems quality policies and procedures. Experience with Computer Systems Validation.

  • Demonstrated ability to establish trusting relationships with business partners.

  • Demonstrated ability to influence, and drive integration points across cross-functional teams.

  • Strong written and oral communication.

  • Demonstrated interpersonal, self-mgmt, collaboration, project mgmt, and problem-solving skills.

 

Additional Preferred Requirements:

  • Strong domain knowledge in SAP and/or Quality Management systems -TrackWise and Labs

  • Working knowledge of DevOps solutions

  • Experience in working in Scrum - agile methodologies, coding standards, code reviews, source management (GitHub), build processes

  • Pharmaceutical or healthcare industry experience

  • Experience with Service Now toolset for incident, problem, and change management

 

Education Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent work experience) in computer science, information technology, or management information systems.

 

Other Information:

Travel to US or other Lilly entities may be required.
