JOB TITLE: Data Engineer, Applied Sciences

SALARY: From £78,000+ (dependent on experience)

LOCATION: Bristol

HOURS: Full-Time

WORKING PATTERN: Our work style is hybrid, which involves spending at least two days per week, or 40% of our time, at one of our office sites

About This Opportunity

Applied Sciences is a team comprised of Data Engineers, Data Scientists and Analysts. We're responsible for leading on the development and implementation of advanced machine learning and AI models, we play a significant role in the delivery of the Commercial Bank's strategic ambitions.

A diligent, capable Data Engineer is required to support in the development of high-quality, productionised and reusable data pipelines to enable the team to deliver at pace.

This role will expose you to all aspects of Commercial data as well as the opportunity of experimenting with open-source, publicly available data sources. There will be additional opportunities to gain exposure to the life cycle of AI projects and machine learning models.

You'll also play a pivotal role in supporting our migration to Google Cloud Platform (GCP).

The successful production of AI and machine learning models is dependent on the strength and reliability of the data underpinning them. The Data Engineering team within Applied Sciences plays a central role in turning an idea into an experiment and then into a live application. You, as a Data Engineer, will be key to making this happen.

A typical day would look like…

Working alongside our team of enthusiastic Data Engineers, based primarily in Bristol, you'll build and design foundational data pipelines – bringing together data from numerous disparate systems into one central data repository.

Working with our partners across Applied Sciences (and our Business & Commercial Banking division), to understand ongoing requirements and priorities, you'll be a crucial member of the team building high-quality application data layers.
 

Focussing on continued personal development – a huge focus is put on continued progression of your own skills and interests as we look to balance immediate priorities with planning for GCP adoption.

What You’ll Need

You'll be an established Data Engineer with the following:

  • Strong understanding of Data Engineering principles and standard methodology

  • Experience in building data pipelines

  • Strong teammate – fantastic collaboration skills with an ability and desire to help coach and upskill others

  • Strong SQL knowledge

  • Python knowledge and its applications within a Data Engineering context

  • An effective communicator, with excellent attention to detail

  • Passionate about problem solving and analysis

  • To be bold and curious, with the confidence to challenge and improve existing processes and help innovate new solutions

And Any Experience Of These Would Be Really Useful

  • Commercial Banking knowledge with an understanding of current areas of focus/growth

  • Experience of automation (setting-up and utilising schedulers)

  • GCP knowledge and exposure

  • Data engineering in the context of AI applications

  • Connectivity with external open-source APIs
