Staff Engineer Data Design

  • You have strong Solution design experience, with high performance across multiple domains/technologies
  • You have strong experience in Data modelling, Data Integration, Cloud & Big Data platforms.
  • You are capable of taking on responsibilities as a thought leader, responsible for providing technical strategy and guidance and influencing a particular solution path.
  • You have strong communication skills - you are fluent in communicating solution design options with a wide range of audiences – both technical and non-technical and providing justification for options, from cost, scalability, timeliness, and robustness perspective.
  • You are capable of taking on complex engineering projects

Across our end-to-end cycle, you will be responsible for providing direction to data teams drawing from your ability to integrate diverse sets of data from multiple sources you will design, develop and build industry-leading group data products.

Reporting into the Chapter Leads in one of our Chief Data and Analytics Office teams, you will be part of a highly skilled, collaborative and culturally diversified Data Engineering team. This role would be ideal for an experienced Solution Designer with commendable recent experience working in big data projects, along with a strong background in managing multiple stakeholder groups. The ideal candidate will have strong communication skills, fluent in articulating solution design options with a wide range of audiences – both technical and non-technical and providing justification for options, from cost, scalability, timeliness, and robustness perspective.

We are not expecting a developer, but we are expecting someone who can provide clear solution direction to developers. You will come with a strong blend of skills in data design, data modelling, API/integration design, along with a commendable exposure in implementing end-to-end Big Data solutions.

We are interested in people who have the following criteria:

  • Specialised experience in implementing solutions in complex projects with strong data integration focus will be highly regarded for this role
  • Have experience in solution design, solution governance and implementing end-to-end Big Data solutions using Hadoop eco-systems (Hive, HDFS, Pig, HBase, Flume, Kafka, Sqoop, YARN, Impala)
  • Possess ability to produce conceptual, logical and physical data models using data modelling techniques such as Data Vault, Kimball, 3NF, etc.
  • Has the ability to design data warehousing and enterprise analytics-based solutions using Teradata or relevant data platforms
  • Can demonstrate expertise in design patterns (FSLDM, IBM IFW DW) and data modelling frameworks including dimensional, star and non-dimensional schemas.
  • Can demonstrate expertise in API and data Integration design for different ingestion load patterns (real-time, batch)
  • Possess commendable experience in consistently driving cost effective and technologically feasible solutions, while steering solution decisions across the group, to meet both operational and strategic goals is essential.
  • Are adept with abilities to positively influence the adoption of new products, solutions and processes, to align with the existing Information Architectural design would be desirable
  • Experience with PEGA will be highly regarded. Note we are not after hands on developer who will build in PEGA, but rather someone who may have been a developer in the past and knows what we can, cannot, and should not do with this technology to inform solution design.

Tech skills  

  • We use a broad range of tools, languages, and frameworks. We don’t expect you to know them all but experience or exposure with some of these (or equivalents) will set you up for success in this team. 
  • Scala, ANSI/ISO SQL, or AbInitio graph along with backend coding expertise in Java and Python   
  • Hadoop / Teradata platform, using Spark, TCF and various ETL frameworks  
  • AVRO, JSON schema design for ingestion will be highly regarded.
  • Machine Learning libraries ad model development, Jupyeter notebook
