Unleash Your Potential!  The Leidos Innovations Center Intelligent Sensors Branch has an opening for a Machine Learning (ML) Research Scientist with a background in graph machine learning and experience developing ML technologies that yield novel, innovative capabilities while advancing the state of the art.

You will support contract R&D and internal R&D programs, working with teams of researchers and engineers in the development, adaptation, and extension of innovative ML-based approaches and solutions across a range of technical areas and application domains. You will also process diverse and disparate types of data of high complexity, and for projects that are both fundamental and applied in nature.

The innovative technical solutions will advance the state of the art in machine learning and/or artificial intelligence while addressing long-term problems of importance to national security.  As such, preferred candidates will have experience executing advanced research and development efforts and working with high-performing teams on software-based solutions for customers such as DARPA and other branches of the Department of Defense. 

Note: Selected candidate can be located anywhere in the U.S. and work remotely. While not required, there is a preference for someone to be located in the Washington D.C./ Northern Virginia area while working remotely. Ability to travel, including to the D.C./Arlington, VA area, may be required for meetings.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to complex data-driven development projects involving diverse data types using modern ML architectures
  • Implement sophisticated feature extraction techniques from complex, high-dimensional datasets
  • Develop and utilize MLOps pipelines to develop/train/test/validate/deploy ML models
  • Work with teams of other data scientists, research scientists, and engineers using an Agile development approach
  • Formulate, prototype, implement, and test existing state-of-the-art as well as novel ML algorithms to solve customer problems
  • Contribute to the generation of competitively sourced proposals for contract R&D projects
  • Produce and communicate reports and presentations that summarize technical results to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Stay up to date with current state-of-the-art data science/ML methods and work with team to employ these methods within current and future R&D projects. 

Basic Qualifications:

  • B.S. degree in computer science, data science, engineering, or a physical science and 4+ years of prior relevant experience or Masters in technical domain above with 2+ years of experience or Ph.D. in technical domain above.
  • Qualified candidates must be a U.S. Citizen and able to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance (no clearance needed to start)
  • Proficiency in Python, PyTorch, Tensorflow, Pandas, and Scikit-learn
  • Experience solving a variety of machine learning problems (e.g., supervised and unsupervised learning techniques, statistical estimation, etc.)
  • Experience with graph database technologies and graph-based machine learning
  • Proficient in data exploration techniques and tools
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative team environment utilizing Agile methodologies
  • Self-starter with high intellectual curiosity
  • Good communication skills with ability to explain results to a non-technical audience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Candidates with Ph.D. in computer science, data science, engineering, or a physical science are preferred.
  • Demonstrated track record of extending ML and AI tools and algorithms to new domains
  • Experience applying and leading the application of ML/AI-based approaches and techniques in fundamental research contexts, to problems in complex domains, under conditions of uncertainty, and dynamic and evolving technical challenges  
  • Strong theoretical and practical understanding beyond a basic level of graph machine learning, transformer models, foundation models, and/or generative models
  • Experience adapting ML algorithms and tools with operational workflows for customers in the US government

Pay Range:

Pay Range $81,250.00 - $146,875.00

The Leidos pay range for this job level is a general guideline only and not a guarantee of compensation or salary. Additional factors considered in extending an offer include (but are not limited to) responsibilities of the job, education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity, alignment with market data, applicable bargaining agreement (if any), or other law.
