This role is in the DroneShield Sydney headquarters in Pyrmont, Sydney. There are approximately 160 staff based in the 4,000sqm facility today, scheduled to grow to approximately 300 staff by end of 2026. Overseas on the ground presence includes Virginia (USA), Denmark, Germany and Dubai, as well as distributors in over 70 countries globally.


About the roleThe company is seeking a Graduate Field Data Engineer with relevant experience to join the team in Sydney. The role will be focused on delivering high quality datasets to support the machine learning lifecycle for Droneshield’s proprietary drone detection algorithms. The successful candidate will be exposed to cutting edge embedded data capture tooling, the machine learning lifecycle, radio frequency mechanics and data processing techniques. The position will be placed within the Data Engineering team or RFAI team.

Responsibilities, Duties and Expectations 

  • This is a multi-disciplinary role, working with the RFAI, Data Engineering and Field Test Engineering teams to create high quality datasets for model training and development. 
  • Record radio-frequency data in a variety of environments. This role offers the opportunity to regularly travel to field sites. Expect to travel within Greater Sydney at least once per week.
  • Process raw recording data on a file system and ingest metadata into a database. 
  • Improve current data capture processes with process and technology improvements.

Qualifications, Experience and Skills 

  • BS degree in an Engineering or an IT related field or equivalent practical experience.
  • Proficiency in Linux and processing data via the terminal.
  • Familiarity with data processing and interacting with structured databases (e.g. SQL).
  • Bonus: Experience working in the machine learning lifecycle (data collection, training & evaluation) in production environments and/or experience with computer networking.
