Job Description Summary

The Wildlife Futures Program (WFP), a wildlife health partnership between the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Veterinary Medicine (Penn Vet) and the Pennsylvania Game Commission (PGC) is seeking a Data Analyst to join our team. The Data Analyst will be responsible for ongoing development of the Shared Wildlife Health Information System (SWHIS), a cloud-based application for us by state fish and wildlife agencies in managing, visualizing, and interpreting their wildlife health data. Specifically, they will contribute to the back-end cloud-based infrastructure management and developing and testing of new features in partnership with the Geospatial Solutions team at the Timmons Group. The Data Analyst will support current SWHIS stakeholders (Users) by identifying “bugs,” and cleaning data for upload to the system, and the position will proactively engage and onboard new stakeholders through presentations and one-on-one meetings. In addition, the Data Analyst will support the database needs and requests for individual and program-level data collecting and management within the Wildlife Futures Program including, data from disease surveillance, diagnostics, research, and biobanking. Participation in the preparation of scientific papers and grant proposals is also required.

The position is based remotely. Position is contingent upon grant funding.

Job Responsibilities

  • Work with Timmons Group to contribute to back-end cloud-based infrastructure management to support existing SWHIS stakeholders and to develop and test new features.
  • Work with Wildlife Futures personnel to integrate existing database systems used for managing the program’s wildlife health data from field collection to biobanking
  • Promote SWHIS to new stakeholder groups through presentations and one-on-one meetings.
  • Work with Wildlife Futures personnel to support database and data visualization needs for individual and project-level data collecting, management, and reporting.
  • Provide materials and writing support for grant submissions to support further development of the Shared Wildlife Health Information System.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree is required, preferably in a quantitative or health science discipline and 2-4 years of professional experience. Demonstrated experience manipulating complex data, including data mining, cleaning, organizing, querying, and analyzing. Fluency in Python and R Shiny required. Experience with animal health, diagnostic data preferred. Excellent communication skills and ability to convey findings to a broad audience (e.g. state agency staff, academic researchers), including quarterly report for users and key stakeholders and routine progress reporting to funders. Proactive, flexible, and innovative; can adapt to changing priorities and needs with an ability to work under short deadlines. Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse team is required.
