Leidos has an opening for a Senior Modeling and Simulation (M&S) Engineer. Leidos is looking for an experienced M&S Engineer with a healthcare background to support the Human Systems Integration division of VHA’s Office of Health Informatics.
 

The Senior M&S Engineer will participate in a cross-functional teams in the provision of Human Factors Engineering and Human Systems Engineering Services to organizational customers that aim to optimize overall system performance.  

The Senior M&S Engineer will support the planning and performance of studies for assessments, evaluations, and analyses to provide recommendations for interactive systems to improve their usefulness and usability.  Studies may include areas to include usability, macro-ergonomics, human factors, instructional systems design, systems safety, applied analysis, cognitive engineering and interaction design functions.  The goal of the program team is to determine user needs by role and perform structured usability testing for critical functionality, including providing baselining and post-implementation assessments, while providing evidence for risk-informed decision-making, consistent with the project’s objectives with respect to simulation.
 

Primary Responsibilities

Work closely with other team members to : 

  • Provide simulation to support predictive data and information on operational performance issues and define functions and tasks to enable assessing workload, evaluating alternative configurations, assessing operating procedures, workflow integration, and identifying accident or error-provocative situations.
  • Perform simulation studies that delineate the current performance from the potential system performance with identified variable factors for short-term solutions and longer-term solutions to inform operational and strategic planning.

The Senior M&S Engineer will be a dedicated resource that provides at least a 60% full-time employee equivalent (FTEE); with availability for team ceremonies and collaborative sessions Monday-Friday, between 7 AM ET and 6 p.m. ET.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and 10+ years of relevant experience in Modeling and Simulation (M&S).
  • Demonstrated blend of domain knowledge, technical expertise, problem-solving abilities, and a commitment to ongoing development that are foundational to successful modeling and simulation practices.
  • Experience in the coordination with customers to identify model requirements, simulation goals, and variables to be applied.  Must be able to develop a clear understanding of customer goals and objectives and shape work activities to satisfy them.
  • Extensive experience in the model design and simulation to include complex multi-system simulations. 
  • Experience developing software modeling and device characterization, hard and soft modeling development, parametric testing, and measurement automation. 
  • Ability to create abstract representations of real-world systems to analyze and predict their behavior. Key skills include understanding the problem domain, developing conceptual and mathematical models, and implementing simulation techniques such as discrete event, continuous, and agent-based simulations.
  • Proficiency in programming languages and simulation software, alongside data handling and analysis, is crucial for building and running simulations effectively. Python Scripting, Object Oriented Programming.
  • Ability to ensure the accuracy of models through validation and verification, and optimizing and analyzing sensitivity, to further enhance the reliability of the simulations.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate with customers, end users, and team members on technical and schedule performance, in both verbal and written methods. Effective communication and documentation are also vital, as they help convey findings and insights to stakeholders.          
  • Must exhibit a propensity for continuous learning and staying current with advancements in modeling techniques and tools to maintain and improve simulation skills.
  • Ability to document and report on test results to users.
  • Experience supporting studies.  

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience in Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and Digital Engineering.
  • Ideally 5 years of experience in a healthcare environment.
  • Experience with electronic healthcare records systems. 
  • VHA domain knowledge.
  • Experience with Jira (or Azure DevOps (ADO)), Powerpoint, Visio.
  • Familiar with Agile development methodology.
  • CART3D, KESTREL, US3D, FUN3D, CFD++.
  • ANSYS, LS-DYNA, Sierra Tool suite.
  • Solidworks or similar CAD experience.
  • Experience with Artificial Neural Nets (TensorFlow, MATLAB tools).

Pay Range:

Pay Range $101,400.00 - $183,300.00
