Job Summary:

The International Studies (IS) Major is an interdisciplinary undergraduate program situated within the UW-Madison International Division. At the core of the International Studies Major is a fundamental recognition that the world outside of the United States, and the Global North, matters. In international Studies we seek to understand not only how global forces are impacting nations, communities, and individuals, but also how different forces are reshaping the globe while impacting each other. This leads to the Major's emphasis on the way that global challenges such as poverty, insecurity, mental health, and climate change are intertwined.

Our team of faculty, staff, and instructors work collaboratively across the International Division and the UW-Madison campus to holistically support our students? personal, academic, and professional development. We value and uplift the unique perspectives, lived experiences, and identities our students bring to our program.

This job will support the mission of the IS Major through academic advising of 300+ undergraduates, developing and implementing student programming, and managing the data needs of both the IS Major and the Institute for Regional and International Studies (IRIS) more broadly as they maintain compliance with federal and international grant mandates.

Responsibilities:

Engages students in decision making processes and promotes appropriate and responsible choices on academic matters such as course selection and degree requirements. Maintains appropriate confidentiality, updates student advising records, and contributes to the development and delivery of academic advising related events and programs. Works to ensure students receive accurate, timely, and holistic advising services in support of promoting student success, retention, and program completion. Strives to create a welcoming, equitable, and inclusive work environment.
  • 10% Receives, processes, and responds to academic inquiries according to established policies and procedures
  • 30% Serves as a main point of contact for students and provides information about educational options and academic requirements; assists with identifying and assessing interests, skills, and values to match appropriate field of study/career options, and refers students to appropriate institutional resources
  • 10% Implements academic advising events such as workshops, panel discussions, and guest speakers
  • 5% Maintains confidentiality and accurate student records and processes and responds to academic inquiries according to established institutional and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) policies
  • 10% Maintains expertise with advised curriculum and may assist in developing and recommending exceptions for policy and curriculum
  • 5% Proactively engages students as needed
  • 10% Participates in the campus-wide advising community providing input to leadership regarding the development of advising, recruitment, and co/curricular programs offered by the school/college
  • 10% Data generation for various major, division, campus, and stakeholder reports
  • 10% Instructional program reviews, assessment, and reporting including course lists and student evaluations

Tasks:

  • Student advising for the International Studies Major, including advising at SOAR and other student fairs
  • Curriculum management, including guide editing and Lumen course submissions for the IS Major and some IRIS centers
  • Instructional program reviews, assessments and reporting for the IS Major and some IRIS centers
  • Data generation for IS Major, IRIS Centers, and International Division reports
  • Creating and managing course lists, student evaluations, and student surveys
  • Other duties in support of the IS Major team as assigned

Education:

Preferred
Bachelor's degree preferred within relevant field

Qualifications:

Required:
Minimum 2 years of experience in student services and student advising
Minimum 2 years of experience in curriculum management and development
Experience with data management and reporting
Standard MS Office skills (particularly Excel)

Preferred:
Familiarity with a range of advising and curricular software and programs (examples include: Student Information System (SIS), Advising Notes Systems (ANS), Degree Audit Reporting System (DARS), Lumen, etc)
International Experiences: living and/or studying abroad, and familiarity with a second language
Experience working with multiple stakeholders and deadlines
Experience with relational database management and SQL queries

Work Type:

Full Time: 100%

This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.

Salary:

Minimum $45,000 ANNUAL (12 months)
