Data Scientist IV

Job Description:

Would you like to be a part of cutting-edge research using artificial intelligence to improve healthcare? Would you like to work at a top-5 public university with a team of world-class scientists and physicians engaged in applications of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence in clinical care and healthcare delivery?

The Precision and Intelligent Systems in Medicine Research Partnership (PRISMAp) Lab in the University of Florida Department of Medicine, led by Intelligent Clinical Care Center (IC3) Director Dr. Azra Bihorac, is looking for a highly experienced, independent, and self-motivated Data Scientist IV. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in multimodal deep learning and hands-on experience with full-stack LLM ecosystems and approaches including prompt engineering, RAG pipelines, tools, chains, and agents.

As a skilled AI/ML scientist, you will lead the technical development and validation of various generative AI systems under the direction of IC3 faculty investigators towards cutting-edge research in AI for health. You will work on multiple projects and collaborate with multidisciplinary scientists, graduate students, and health professionals across UF and nationwide. You will be engaged in the design, coordination, and implementation of generative AI-augmented diagnostic, prognostic, and clinical decision-making systems with a strong focus on safety, ethics, and clinical alignment. As an experienced AI/ML practitioner, you may also assist with leadership and training initiatives such as AI Passport, datathons, hackathons, and bootcamps.

Our lab focuses on innovative medical AI research, education, and clinical applications that can transform the diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of critically and acutely ill patients. We are idealists, problem solvers, and explorers of digital health and AI.

Essential Functions;

Development and Validation of Large Language Model Systems for Clinical Applications
• Design, develop, and deploy generative AI research pipelines that leverage the latest advances in LLM agents, external knowledge bases, and software tools for next-generation clinical decision support.
• Apply state-of-the-art natural language processing techniques for analyzing and reasoning over large-scale repositories of clinical notes and other unstructured data in the context of clinical problems.
• Lead a collaborative research effort to advance our generative AI research agenda through multiple projects, yielding new algorithms, prototypes, theories, tools, methods, analyses, and insights.

Best Practices, Team leadership and Project Management
• Provide technical assistance to and oversight throughout project development and execution.
• Define subsystems and their interfaces, allocate responsibilities, and communicate requirements for interactions within the solution context.
• Identify opportunities to create reusable components and advance technical strategies.
• Establish and maintain best practices for data exploration, end-to-end model development and deployment lifecycle, and data/code/documentation management.
• Continuously evaluate and incorporate state-of-the-art advancements in AI, machine learning, LLMs, and privacy-preserving techniques.
• Document technical processes and contribute to the knowledge sharing within a diverse team

Course Development and Implementation
• Work with the team to build course modules for AI Passport.
• Mentor trainees through community calls, hackathons, bootcamps, and other training initiatives.

Manuscript and Grant Submission
• Author AI research papers and develop presentations and other relevant materials.
• Analyze, visualize, and summarize key results for inclusion in scientific publications.

External Engagement and Collaboration
• Engage with external stakeholders, industry partners, and funding agencies to explore collaborations opportunities and promote the institution’s research capabilities.
