This role is in the DroneShield Sydney headquarters in Pyrmont, Sydney. There are approximately 170 staff based in the 4,000sqm facility today, scheduled to grow to approximately 300 staff by end of 2026. Overseas on the ground presence includes Virginia (USA), Denmark, Germany and Dubai, as well as distributors in over 70 countries globally.


About the roleThe company is seeking a Intern/Graduate/Junior Field Data Engineer with relevant experience to join the team in Sydney. The role will be focused on delivering high quality datasets to support the machine learning lifecycle for Droneshield’s proprietary drone detection algorithms. The successful candidate will be exposed to cutting edge embedded data capture tooling, the machine learning lifecycle, radio frequency mechanics and data processing techniques. The position will be placed within the Embedded Engineering team. 

Responsibilities, Duties and Expectations 

  • Undertake regular (weekly) data acquisition field missions to gather sensor and product observability data. 
  • Own the organisation and planning of data acquisition field missions. 
  • Own the preparation, packing (before) and unpacking (after) of data acquisition field missions. 
  • Own the execution of data acquisition field missions. 
  • Data cleaning and preparation of data sets for product performance analysis and AI development. 
  • Contributing to and developing reports communicating business level metrics of our products for sales, engineering, and senior management. 
  • Improve current data acquisition processes with process and technology.

Qualifications, Experience and Skills 

  • A Bachelor's degree, or degree in progress (minimum 3rd year) in a relevant field. 
  • Comfort with fieldwork and the collection of critical data. 
  • Must be physically able to lift weight of up to 30kg. 
  • Attention to detail and highly developed organizational capabilities. 
  • Proficiency in Linux and processing data and text documents in the terminal. 
  • Familiarity with basic and intermediate networking concepts in a practical setting advantageous. 
  • Familiarity with data processing and interacting with structured databases. 
  • SQL experience is desirable. 
  • Prior experience with drones, hobby drones and rf emitter technology desirable.
