Data Engineer II

ASU Enterprise Partners is an efficient network of highly skilled teams; it is comprised of a full complement of professional services that work in concert with specialized business units to provide full resources and extend Arizona State University’s ability to achieve its charter.   

The Data Engineer II is a member of the Data Engineering team within the Data Analytics and Insights (DAI) department at ASU Enterprise Partners (ASUEP). Data Engineering supports the integrity, augmentation, integration, security, and stewardship of all ASUEP data assets. This position works closely with other teams at ASUEP and ASU to support technologies and processes to ensure data is available in an accurate, complete, and timely manner to support business decisions, processes, and reporting. This position reports to the Senior Director, Data Engineering.

What you'll do:
  • Develop Data solutions on Microsoft AZURE Cloud

  • Develop new and manage existing integrations between various data sources and an AZURE Cloud Data Warehouse

  • Migrate on premises SQL Server data systems and processes to AZURE Cloud

  • Migrate ETL packages from SSIS to Azure Data Factory in the Cloud

  • Create processes to manage capacity and performance of data solutions in the Cloud

  • Develop SQL Stored Procedures, Tables and Views in a Data Warehouse environment

  • Develop complex SQL queries to investigate data for end users

  • Validate and clean existing data using SQL

  • Debug complex database processes and implement fixes in a timely manner

  • Deploy code from a repository to Production systems

  • Work with stakeholders to identify sources of data in the environment

  • Classify data stored in the Data Warehouse

  • Manage multiple projects and assignments concurrently

  • Collaborate with other institutional parties to ensure consistency, accuracy, and availability of data

  • Establish and maintain effective communications with other team members

  • Document, track progress and complete tasks in a timely manner

  • Perform other duties and projects as required

What you'll need:
  • Expertise with managing Data Warehouses on AZURE Cloud

  • Expertise with integrating data from various sources into Data Warehouses

  • Experience with database technologies in a hybrid cloud/on premises model

  • Competency with ETL tools such as SSIS and ADF

  • Compelling interest in data, Data Warehouses and the movement of data

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Windows and Office applications

  • Capacity to quickly learn new tools and technologies as needed

  • Knowledge of best practice industry data security principles, methods, and techniques

  • Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality and responsibility regarding information related to ASUEP, its Subsidiaries, University Business, and confidential Prospect information

  • Ability to create technical documentation

  • A drive to optimize current processes and improve quality

  • Able to communicate effectively in person, writing, and by phone

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team

  • Ability to foster and instill trust through interpersonal interactions

  • Capable of fostering cooperative work-teams by developing mutually beneficial relationships

  • Attention to detail and thoroughness in completing assigned duties with consistent follow through

  • Able to articulate deliverables, objectives, results, and outcomes

  • Highly organized and able to work efficiently on multiple tasks simultaneously with deadlines

  • Proficient at establishing milestones and timetables

  • Knowledge of applicable regulatory requirements associated with PII, FERPA, and PCI-DSS

  • Certification, or willingness to complete certification, for Azure Fundamentals or equivalent

  • An advocate’s belief in the vision of ASU as the New American University

Relevant qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology or related field AND

  • At least five (5) five years’ experience delivering information technology services which includes two (2) years with AZURE Cloud technologies with demonstrated critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

  • Experience with the development of integrated strategies and solutions addressing differing needs, understandings, and objectives;

  • OR any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved.
