Introduction

Scania is now undergoing a transformation from being a supplier of trucks, buses and engines to a supplier of complete and sustainable transport solutions.

A thesis project at Scania provides an excellent way of getting to know the organisation and to create your own network. Many of our current employees started their career with a thesis project. If you would like to be a part of a great team with established knowledge on exhaust aftertreatment system and contribute to the understanding of future demands for the existing products, you are welcome to challenge yourself with this thesis project.

Background
Whenever something goes wrong for a Scania vehicle on the roads, it is an opportunity to learn and improve. With access to large amounts of field quality data (fault codes, workshops tests, changed components, failure reports and more) it can quickly become overwhelming to analyze what happened, and how we can work to prevent faults in the future. Since it would not be possible to dive into the data of each and every truck, there is a need for a quicker way to visualize the trends in the data across multiple vehicles.

Objective
At our group, Urea Dosing Systems, we need to create a better understanding of the field quality data for our urea pumps and dosing units. For this purpose, we envision a data visualization tool that will help us find the “broad strokes” of the field quality data.

In a perfect world, vehicle fault codes would exactly pinpoint a faulty component, making it easy for a workshop to replace exactly what is broken. In reality, fault codes often are not this precise, making it challenging for workshops to know what to replace, which can result in unpredictable and erroneous part replacements. Your work will aim to clarify such data trends.

Job description
The work will start with a literature review of how to approach analysis and visualization of large data sets (big data analytics), and how other corporations work with field quality data. There is a lot to learn in this field and you will be given free hands to implement your findings.

The main task is then to create a tool for visualisation of field quality data, intended to make it easier to analyse and understand the chain of events that lead to a component being replaced. We imagine it to be an application built in MATLAB or Python, for example, so it is essential that you are comfortable and capable as a programmer. We would like to stress that the programming capability of our group is limited, but we work closely with software developers who may assist as needed.

You will be given free hands to develop your own ideas, and it is important to not be afraid of failure. The success of the work will depend on your ability to search out information and put it to use.

Education/program/focus
Master student in Computer Science or similar. Previous experience in application development is a strong merit.
