Position Title

Tenure-Track Faculty Positions in Computer Science
 

The Opportunity

The Department of Computer Science at the Colorado School of Mines (Mines) invites applications for two tenure-track faculty positions in Computer Science anticipated to begin in August 2025. The search is for faculty hires at the rank of Assistant Professor; however, exceptional candidates at higher ranks may be considered. While all qualified candidates are encouraged to apply, the department is especially interested in candidates with research specialization in one or more of the following broadly defined areas: Machine Learning and AI (e.g., Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Big Data Computing, Computer Vision, and Bioinformatics), and Quantum Computing (e.g., quantum information theory, quantum machine learning, quantum cryptography, quantum error correction, and quantum algorithms).


Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain a vigorous, externally supported research program that enhances the overall research portfolio of the Department.

  • Develop and teach courses that are valuable to undergraduate and graduate students, both within computer science and across Mines.

  • Supervise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students.

  • Contribute both institutionally and professionally through active service.

  • Cultivate and promote an inclusive and diverse Mines community through recruiting, mentorship, collaboration, and service.
     

Minimum Qualifications
  • Ph.D. from an accredited program in Computer Science or a closely related field relevant to the search areas by the time the appointment begins.

  • Record of publication at top-tier international conferences and/or journals in one or more of the search areas.

  • Commitment to excellence in teaching and curriculum development at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

  • Demonstrated understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion issues in higher education and a commitment to addressing these issues through concrete action.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Assistant Professor candidates must demonstrate the potential for excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service.

  • Associate and Full Professor candidates must have an established and currently funded program with clear potential for continuance, and a proven track record of success in teaching, research, and service. In addition, Full Professor candidates should have an established international reputation. 

  • Evidence of externally funded research is required for an appointment with tenure. 
     

About Mines & The Department

Located in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, Mines is a public R1 research university focused on applied science and engineering.  The CS Department consists of 27 full-time faculty and hosts a thriving research program focusing on algorithms, human-centered computing, machine learning & data science, robotics, security & privacy, and systems.  The department educates approximately 1000 undergraduate and 140 graduate students, offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science, and supports growing interdisciplinary programs in Quantum EngineeringData Science,RoboticsQuantitative Biosciences and Engineering, and Operations Research with Engineering.  The CS faculty often advise graduate students in these programs, and they work collaboratively with researchers in other departments, universities, hospitals (including CU-Anschutz Medical Campus), national labs, and industry partners.  

The state of Colorado has emerged as a leading hub for quantum technology. A unique convergence of academic, governmental, and private sector resources in Colorado has led to a consortium dubbed “Elevate Quantum”, which has recently secured federal and state support to help lead the US quantum technology efforts. Colorado's vibrant ecosystem in high-tech, coupled with government investment and collaborations between academia and industry, has already attracted many leading quantum companies and researchers to the area.  Critical to achieving the Elevate Quantum vision is the Quantum COmmons, a 70-acre site owned by Mines and dedicated to advancing quantum technology.

The computer science faculty integrate machine learning, artificial intelligence, and data sciences into much of their teaching and research, allowing them to provide structure, and quantitative insights for collaborative solutions of data-driven problems.  This broad interest in AI/ML and data sciences more generally has created a collegial research environment among our faculty and also fosters many interdisciplinary collaborations across Mines and the broader Colorado research community.  Mines faculty are also engaged in programs such as Colorado’s ElevateAI program to enhance AI literacy and transform education and workforce development.  Along with Colorado’s designation as a Quantum Tech Hub, ElevateAI also creates a unique opportunity to explore the integration of quantum computing into K-12 education career pathways in partnership with statewide efforts.  More information about the university and the CS Department can be found at http://mines.edu and http://cs.mines.edu. Compensation and Benefits:

The annual salary range for this position is as follows:

Assistant Professor:  $ 110,160 – $121,800

Associate Professor:  $117,000 – $139,000

Professor:  $143,000 – $189,000

Mines takes into consideration a combination of the candidate’s education, training, and experience as well as the position’s scope and complexity, the discretion, and latitude required in the role, work location, and external market and internal value when determining a salary level for potential new employees.
