AI & ML Technologists at DC work closely with technology team members and stakeholders across our organisation to initiate and develop new innovative projects, seek R&D funding, work with our corporate partners and help startups. Technologists' work includes industrial R&D, building commercial POCs and pilots, trials to accelerate the deployment of new technologies and consulting to support acceleration and innovation programmes. We have an increasing emphasis on the energy sector and energy transition in our work, and candidates with experience there will be particularly well-suited.

In return, Digital Catapult offers an opportunity to work on a unique blend of AI/ML industrial R&D, IP and asset development while getting exposure to the UK AI/ML startup ecosystem and AI/ML adopters in industry. It also offers the opportunity to gain exposure to other related digital technologies like Future Networks (5G, IoT), Augmented Reality, Distributed Systems and Quantum Computing, all of which are the other technology areas that DC focuses on. This helps AI/ML Technologists hone their expertise in diverse areas, including AI technology, communication and business development, that are valuable across a diverse range of future career options.

WHAT YOU’LL DO (Duties)

  • Contribute to developing and executing industrial R&D projects by exploring, building on and, where necessary, extending the current state of the art in AI/ML in areas like generative AI, verifiable AI, neuro-symbolic AI and reinforcement learning. Take ownership of specific aspects of industrial R&D projects as needed.
  • Contribute to developing commercial AI/ML proofs of concepts and pilots for industry clients.
  • Contribute to developing IP and capabilities for Digital Catapult in cutting-edge AI technologies through your technical work.
  • Gather and understand requirements from partners/clients and go from high-level ambiguous problem description to exploration of multiple options to selection and implementation of an eventual solution.
  • Maintain expertise in the state of the art of AI/ML by keeping current with the latest research, and carry out thought leadership activities such as speaking at events and publishing articles.
  • Contribute to developing project proposals and related business development activities.

Requirements

  • Broad, deep and hands-on experience with key AI/ML technologies including, but not limited to classical machine learning, deep learning, and data science: in terms of algorithms, data engineering, software tools and hardware. Experience carrying out fundamental research in a relevant area is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrable experience working with Python in the standard machine learning/deep learning stack, utilising software engineering principles.
  • Experience with using cloud-based services for the development and deployment of machine learning models. Familiarity with the software stack including git, SQL, and Docker.
  • Broad understanding of current technology debates in AI+ML, their economic, sustainability and ethical implications.
  • Proactive and self-reliant, adaptable to changing and evolving priorities whilst being able to identify new opportunities and initiate projects. Leadership experience from a consulting, research or commercial setting is a plus.
  • Experience in communicating and presenting to a wide range of audiences, from lay people, to lay domain experts and experts in AI/ML.
  • Experience in the Energy sector is a plus.
