We are hiring up to one (1) full-time, permanent Engineer, Asset Management to join our forward-thinking, dynamic and engaged Asset Management team and work out of Edmonton, Alberta.

This opportunity is open to Internal and External candidates.

As the Engineer, Asset Management, you will be developing plans, practices and programs to manage distribution assets for EPCOR’s Electricity Operations business unit. You will be collaborating with cross-functional teams to develop and deliver multiple capital and operational programs, leveraging your engineering and asset management expertise while applying data-driven approaches to optimize asset performance. You will use your attention to detail and organization skills for the development and justification of the assigned asset portfolio plans.

As a strong collaborator and relationship builder, you will liaise with stakeholders and ensure success of the portfolio you are managing. Additionally, you need to have a capability to authenticate corresponding engineering deliverables in near future if you do not have professional designation yet. We want to add your diverse perspective, team player attitude and your knowledge and experience to our team in the Asset Management Engineer position. The Engineer, Distribution Asset Management reports to, and works closely with the Manager, Asset Management.

What you’d be responsible for

• Identifying and developing optimized capital and operational Asset Management Plans that will include:
  • Identifying asset information requirements to manage assets during their life cycle.
  • Corresponding asset management processes and practices to ensure compliance to policies, standards, regulatory requirements and organizational objectives.
  • Identifying budget requirements for the provision of capital and operational projects and programs including engineering and construction.
  • Ensuring the complete asset lifecycle is managed, planning and monitoring the delivery of asset plan components.
• Assessing asset condition and developing asset scopes.

• Developing business cases, regulatory files, supporting filing documentation specified by the current Performance Based Regulatory (PBR) framework using guidelines from the Alberta Utility Commission (AUC) via the regulatory group.
• Ensuring accuracy and prudence of the asset management decisions by analyzing large quantities of asset data and information, building asset risk profiles, and recommending decisions for asset intervention.
• Optimizing Asset Management Deliverables with assistance of Artificial Intelligence.
• Ensuring accuracy and quality of the asset data, data systems, and information used to make asset management decisions.
• Working closely with the System Planning team to ensure the effective and efficient asset intervention alternatives.
• Working alongside with Grid Modernization team to support delivery of the corresponding projects.
• Maintaining working knowledge of system and asset management standards and best practices; such as ISO 55000.
• Maintaining working knowledge of asset data management and analysis tools, and asset management platforms.
• Maintaining working knowledge of Risk Management Standard (ISO 31000).
• Maintaining working knowledge of safeguarding company information (ISO 27001).

What’s required to be successful

• A Degree in Electrical, Computer Engineering, Civil/Structural, or Mechanical Engineering from a recognized post-secondary institute.
  • Alternatively, a diploma in these areas of study and Professional Licensee (P.L.) designation will also be considered.
  • A Master’s degree or higher (i.e. M.Eng., M.Sc. or Ph.D) would be considered as an asset.
• A Professional Designation:
  • Certified Professional Engineer (P. Eng),
  • Professional Licensee (P.L.) designation, or
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) registered with APEGA.
• 2+ years of cumulative experience ideally in electric utility asset management, planning, and engineering.
• Experience with machine learning frameworks (TensorFlow, PyTorch, etc.), and experience/ familiarity with machine learning concepts and algorithms.
• Proficient in at least one of programming languages (Java, Python, C++, R, SQL).
• Experience with multi-cloud computing, data wrangling and visualization, data pipelining, manipulation and analysis. Have a strong foundation in mathematical modeling and statistical analysis.
• Proven ability to apply, integrate and effectively communicate machine learning into various aspects of asset management practices and business processes.
• Ability to collaborate effectively and build relationships across teams.
• Understanding of utilities business and regulatory environment in Alberta.
• Demonstrated competency in understanding electric utility assets.
• Demonstrated competency in understanding and applying analytical techniques necessary to handle studies of moderate complexity.
• Strong organizational, interpersonal, problem solving and analytical skills.
• Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
