Role Summary

 

This entry-level role is in the Operations Research Group, which is part of the Data Science organization. It supports decision-making across Eastman’s businesses and corporate functions by employing optimization and simulation techniques to address complex challenges. The essence of the role is translating business needs into mathematical problems and solutions, then delivering answers that are understandable, insightful, and actionable. You will accomplish this by working with team members to formalize, build, and deploy models with transparent and reliable outcomes, and by building capabilities for users to run the models. Projects are typically in the areas of supply chain, logistics, manufacturing, finance and business management. This challenging role requires substantial technical skills, including programming and mathematical/statistical techniques, business acumen, and the ability to communicate effectively in various mediums.

 

 

Responsibilities

  • Translate business requirements into operations research problems, turn model solutions into business insights, and share results with relevant stakeholders.
  • Create and maintain operations research solutions to support decision-makers in addressing recurring or continuous decision problems.
  • Develop an understanding of Eastman’s data and relevant external data to maximize its utility.
  • Network with clients to understand the products, processes, and challenges in selected areas.
  • Collaborate with other Data Science team members and embedded business analysts to meet Eastman’s operations research needs.

Qualifications

 

  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Operations Research, Industrial Engineering, or comparable field providing in-depth knowledge of simulation (including discrete-event, Monte Carlo, and agent-based techniques) or optimization (including linear, non-linear, and integer programming).
  • Proficiency in programming languages like Python, C#, VB.NET, R, or similar, with experience in object-oriented development and agile project techniques.
  • Familiarity with data querying, processing, and visualization using various tools, including relational databases, flat files, SQL, Excel, Power Query, Power BI, Tableau, and similar technologies.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate with diverse audiences, including one-on-one interactions, group discussions, and leadership presentations.
