Role Description

This role is ideally suited for a fairly senior SQL expert, looking to build elegant, simple and effective data pipelines that process ecommerce data into inputs for dashboards, decisions, personalisation and AI tools. You’ll get deep into technical details, but also be closely involved in turning those outputs into revenue-generating offerings online and within our teams. Plus, you'll need commercial "common sense" when architecting table structures and field definitions, to ease the later consumption of the data structures.

You will work primarily across three brands (Faithful to Nature, UCOOK and Pet Heaven), where we are working to deploy impactful data tools in a consistent, centralised data infrastructure.

You should ideally be based in Cape Town, but we are flexible, and regardless you will enjoy an accommodative hybrid working environment.

Our Tech Stack

Our technology stack is rooted in a cloud-based infrastructure, primarily leveraging serverless architecture.

• Data warehouse: BigQuery
• ELT-based pipelines: Datastream and Airbyte for ingestion, Dataform for transformations and lineage, and various systems including n8n for integrating with other tools
• Analytics: PowerBI
• Transactional ecommerce systems: MySQL, PHP (Magento), Node.js, React.js
• Other data-related systems: Google Analytics, CRM tools
• Utility: Git, JIRA, Notion, Slack

Key Performance Areas

The core SQL Engineer role is to use SQL to produce data assets:

• Build SQL-based transformations, to build high-quality data assets that expose insights and plug into customer-facing workflows
• Use extract-and-load tools to retrieve data from various systems, and inject customer insights back into transactional systems
• Collaborate on PowerBI-driven dashboards and reports, independently and with BI team members
• Use AI, data science tools and/or statistical approaches to meet customer needs across our channels
• Design and build workflows to achieve data-driven campaigns
• Collaborate effectively with colleagues in the data team, tech teams, marketing, and beyond

In addition, candidates with skills and/appetite, can work on AI-powered tools, data visualisation, and/or API-driven workflows.

Skills and Experience

Required:

• Relevant tertiary qualification (bachelors or diploma, in relevant field)
• At least 4 years of experience with SQL-driven relational databases in a modern data environment
• At least 2 - 3 years working in a data engineering environment
• Some familiarity with cloud-based data warehouses or tools
• At least basic software development knowledge, e.g., Python
• A commercial and collaborative focus: you should enjoy working with other functions to deploy amazing offerings to customers, rather than staying in a data silo

Advantageous:

• Experience with AI tools (professionally or personally)
• Experience developing reports in PowerBI or similar
• Experience with Python or Javascript
• Experience using Google Analytics and related analytics tools from Google
• Experience in e-commerce or related consumer-facing industries
