The Role:
Moderna is seeking an exceptionally talented and motivated intern with a background in quantum computing algorithms to join out Computational Science team for the first half of 2025.

As an intern within the CompSci team, this role will be responsible for developing and implementing quantum computing algorithms for mRNA optimization and quantum chemistry problems, with a long-term impact on Moderna’s research strategy in next-generation technologies to advance and accelerate mRNA research and science. They will be accountable for delivering independent research, deploying quantum algorithms and presentations on their project. We are looking for someone who is detail-oriented, deeply curious, exhibits an excellent work ethic, and is eager to expand their existing quantum computing skillsets with cutting-edge methods while applying them to impactful scientific questions. The successful applicant will work closely with computational scientists, bioinformaticians, and quantum chemists within Research and Early Developments teams to develop new application for quantum computing for mRNA drug design.

Our Winter/Spring co-op program will run from January 21st – June 20, 2025. All applicants must be available to work full-time for the entire duration of the program.

Here’s What You’ll Do:

  • Conduct fundamental and applied research at the frontiers of applications of quantum computing for mRNA drug design including but not limited to optimization, quantum chemistry, and quantum machine learning

  • Develop novel quantum algorithms for mRNA optimization and related problems.

  • Execute algorithms on state-of-the-art utility scale quantum hardware

  • Stay up to date with the latest developments in quantum computing algorithms and applications

Here’s What You’ll Bring to the Table:

  • Minimum GPA of 3.4

  • Major: Biochemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science or similar

  • Programming experience required; Python experience preferred

  • Deep understanding and prior experience of quantum computing algorithms for optimization and quantum chemistry

  • Strong written and oral communication skills and a track record of achievement in publications

  • Capable of efficiently contributing to multiple concurrent and fast-paced projects
