The Health Equity Data Lab (HEDL) at the Lucy Family Institute for Data and Society (LFIDS) seeks highly motivated and enthusiastic candidates to fill several Resident Scholar Postdoctoral Fellow positions. Lauched less than a year ago, the HEDL at the Lucy Family Institute is working to advance interdisciplinary research and translation at the intersection of health equity and data science / AI, identified through a collaborative process. HEDL will develop a comprehensive framework for tackling health and health care equity challenges, specifically at theintersection of medical and social care. The Lab will take a data-driven approach, which will work to identify measurable and actionable health inequities to prioritize resource allocation.

The vision of HEDL is to become the pre-eminent convening center of discussions, problem scoping, and solutions on health equity data and responsible AI for health & wellbeing. Post-doctoral research associates will play a critical role in working with Notre Dame community and the industry to develop novel, groundbreaking research that helps execute this vision, supporting ongoing research projects and data analysis aimed at uncovering and addressing health disparities, and investigating the role of multiple social determinants of health in population well-being. 

 

There are several possible areas of research for interested candidates:

1. Maternal Health

Working under the guidance of the Health Equity Data Lab Director and faculty lead Prof. Santosh Kumar, the post-doctoral will extensively work on an impact evaluation project of maternal health and nutrition intervention in the state of Indiana. The fellow will contribute to new and ongoing research activities, including formulation and execution of all stages of research. You will also participate in collecting, managing, and analyzing data, generating reports, and presenting key findings from the research work.

2. Health Equity-Specific Provocations:

1) Social Determinants of Health

2) Health Equity Data Index

3) Beyond Human Resources - the health and well-being of communitities

4) The Health Workforce of the Future

Under each of these provocations are research projects that are supported by Notre Dame academic community and partnering industries. All current and future projects have the potential to make a large impact in the health equity data field.

The position is funded for a year with a possibility for an extension for another year, depending on performance. Salary will commesurate with skills and experience, and the position is benefit-eligible. Qualifications

Successful candidate must have the following qualifications: 

1. Ph.D. in a relevant field (e.g., Economics, public health, Public Policy, epidemiology, statistics, global health) with strong quantitative and writing skills.

 

2. Expertise in applied microeconomics methods and research design and data analysis

3. Experience in designing and conducting empirical research in nutrition, maternal child health, public health, and social determinants of health.

4.  Demonstrated experience in qualitative or quantitative research skills, including data analysis and interpretation, excellent written and oral communication skills, and ability to work independently and with interdisciplinary collaborators. 

5. Experience in causal analysis, spatial analysis Arc GIS, QGIS, qualitative analysis software (NVivo, Atlas), programming languages (e.g. R, Python, Stata). Substantial experience with randomized controlled trials and/or machine learning strongly preferred 

6. Excellent organizational and project management skills with attention to detail; ability to work in a diverse team environment that includes both academia and health and business industry teams; commitment to promoting health equity and addressing disparities in population health
