THE DIVISION
The Divisions of Dam Safety & Floodplain Management at DCR are looking for the best and the brightest the Commonwealth has to offer! The Divisions of Dam Safety & Floodplain Management have an award-winning team and data tracking system that positions the divisions as leaders in dam safety and floodplain management. Dam Safety staff work to provide for proper and safe design, construction, operation, and maintenance of dams to protect public safety. The Floodplain Management team is charged with improving Virginia’s flood protection programs and is designated as the coordinating agency of the National Flood Insurance Program and resilience planning efforts. Both Dam Safety and Floodplain Management offer technical assistance and community education, coordinate with other state and federal agencies, and receive and provide grant funding through federal and state sources.
The Divisions of Dam Safety & Floodplain Management have a mission to protect the lives and property of the Commonwealth’s citizens from natural and manmade flooding through the implementation and administration of Virginia Dam Safety Act (§ 10.1-604 et seq.) and Impounding Structure Regulations (4VAC50-20).
THE OPPORTUNITY
Within the Divisions of Dam Safety and Floodplain Management (DSFM), this position will be responsible for GIS maintenance of DSFM applications, including but not limited to the Virginia Flood Risk Information System (VFRIS) and the Dam Safety Inventory System (DSIS). This position will be responsible for GIS layer updates within VFRIS, creation and upkeep of system documentation, and end user data support. This position will also support database management, research, and GIS functions of the Division of Dam Safety. In addition, this position will work alongside data services staff during report creation, organization, and maintenance of DSFM business intelligence tools.
Minimum Qualifications
- Considerable professional experience using GIS and enterprise GIS.
- Experience developing reports from relational databases using both SQL and business intelligence tools, including developing and implementing data QA/QC procedures.
- Considerable professional experience planning effectively, managing tasks, and performing duties with minimal supervision.
- Experience with database management and relational databases.
Additional Considerations
- Experience using ESRI products in an enterprise GIS setting.
- Experience applying GIS for long-range planning needs in local, state, or federal government.
- Experience developing and presenting training materials for data applications to stakeholders and end users.
- Experience with customer service in an IT support environment.
- Experience using MS SQL Server.
- Strong organizational skills.
