Bioinformatics Field Applications Scientist (UK) 
We are looking for a highly motivated and driven individual to join the Technical Services team as a Bioinformatics Field Applications Scientist. The role will suit someone with a strong bioinformatics and genomics background, and a dedication to customer service and satisfaction.

This exciting and challenging role involves working within a cross-functional team to provide high-quality technical expertise, training, consultancy, and representation of Nanopore products and data analysis solutions. You will work to strengthen the company’s relationship with scientists to ensure the application of our products to their research. 
 

You will assist customers in bioinformatics focused aspects of experimental design, analysis workflow development, deployment, validation, and adoption in collaboration with other internal and customer facing teams.  

Responsibilities:

  • Providing front-line applications and bioinformatics support to customers on all aspects of Nanopore sequencing analysis workflows 
  • Working with the Technical Application and Sales teams to provide support to strategic customer accounts 
  • Providing high quality technical expertise to customers 
  • Learning, implementing and troubleshooting new methods of identifying customer problems and suggesting working solutions based on our bioinformatics products 
  • Working with our Field Applications teams to support customer projects from initial discussion through to analysis completion 
  • Coordinating the delivery of bioinformatics application training and consultancy services offered by Oxford Nanopore Technologies Plc; attending conferences and Nanopore Days 
  • Recording and documenting all relevant information from customers and prospective customers into the CRM 
  • Onboarding and mentoring junior members of the team 

 

What we're looking for…

  • Ph.D. degree in bioinformatics plus substantial data analysis experience in a related field such as genomics, genetics, transcriptomics, etc.  
  • A background of working with large NGS data sets and analysis pipelines such as, but not limited to; genome assembly and annotation, variant calling, structural variant detection, transcriptomics or phylogenetic analysis 
  • Experience in one or more Data Science programming languages like Python, Perl, R or similar. Familiarity working in Linux command line environment, and with computing cluster/HPC environments 
  • Experience benchmarking tools, workflows or systems for data analysis 
  • Experience in the biological interpretation of data and analysis results 
  • We expect technical competency to understand and clearly discuss fundamental aspects and principles of experimental design and bioinformatics approaches; to stay current in technical knowledge  
  • You should have an approachable manner that encourages interaction with others and a strong commitment to customer satisfaction. You will be an excellent trouble-shooter and able to manage different priorities 
  • Travel  (40- 60%) is a part of this role
