Job Title: Books Data Analyst

Location(s): Dordrecht - Hybrid Working Model

About the Role

We are looking for a Data Analyst to provide invaluable insights on the quantitative trends and the performance of our book portfolio. Data on book output, usage, sales, citations and other performance metrics will become second nature to you. You will pinpoint book segments that warrant attention, highlight both traditional and new strengths and provide suggestions for optimization. You can make SWOT analyses and translate your findings into lucid presentations for non-experts. You will have a particular focus on analysis that helps enhance the knowledge within Books Management, Research Sales and Marketing of our book portfolio, but may also need to contribute to strategic projects that fall outside of this as required. 

You possess strong statistical skills combined with a business-oriented mindset. You will be an expert in collecting, analyzing and presenting book portfolio data. 

You are a networker who collaborates efficiently with colleagues from different departments, and you enjoy communicating your findings. You will be expected to work independently and show initiative as a valued member of the small team of three people in Books Business Optimization.  

Role Responsibilities:

  • Compile and distribute reports to help meet the information needs of internal customers in the Book Management and Research Sales and Marketing teams
  • Analyze data using statistical techniques; identify, analyze, and interpret trends or patterns
  • Create dashboards, graphs and visualizations to ensure effective communication and enable self-service 
  • Provide concise insight reports describing key data and trends
  • Investigate, develop, implement and monitor automated reporting for the most common or routine requests 
  • Maintain and optimize existing lists and dashboards such as the Books Birthday Reports, the Top Books Dashboard, and the eBook Package Value Dashboard 
  • Collaborate with other departments (Market Intelligence, Analytics Center of Excellence, MRPA, Production Technology, Customer Insights and Analytics, etc.) to identify and optimize the use of data sources and to support alignment of data and company initiatives where required
  • Connect with the developers of existing data-driven tools, or tools in development such as the Book Performance Estimation Tool, the Access Checker, and the Series and Package reporting tool to drive their further improvement 

Experience, Skills & Qualifications:

Essential: 

  • Strong statistical and analytical skills, with a demonstrated ability to accurately collect and organize information  
  • Strong knowledge of, and experience with, Excel and SQL 
  • Working knowledge of the Google Cloud Platform and Google Big Query 
  • Experience with business intelligence software (Looker, Looker Studio)  
  • Familiarity with coding, scripts, and web crawling  
  • Excellent data presentation and report writing skills   
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in statistics or a scientific subject 
  • Training/work experience in a field related to science or data analysis  

Desirable: 

  • Experience with programming (e.g. Python, R)  
  • Experience in database administration and analysis 
  • Experience in, or affinity with, the academic publishing industry  
  • Willingness to learn new technologies and methodologies  
  • Ability to work independently 
  • Ability to adapt to multiple demands and shifting priorities
