Amazon Robotics is looking for a Systems Development Engineer (SysDE-I) who is passionate, innovative and has a strong drive to automate and simplify. This position will report to the Software Development Manager for Unified Workcell Compute within the Global Edge Compute Team and have responsibility for designing, building, and operating resilient cloud-based services designed to manage edge devices at scale.
The Amazon Robotics Global Edge Compute team is responsible for services that manage Amazon's edge compute fleet - 1,000,000+ devices across 3000+ locations worldwide. Our systems manage everything from cutting edge robotics systems in Austin, to delivery stations in Cairo. We deliver innovative technical solutions to facilitate the massive growth in Amazon compute capabilities around the globe.
Our team's mandate is to design, develop, and operate the next generation of device automation systems that allow for the provisioning and management of edge devices at Amazon scale. We're looking for entrepreneurial and innovative individuals who thrive on solving tough problems.
Everyone on the team needs to be entrepreneurial, wear many hats and work in a highly collaborative environment. As an Amazon Systems Development Engineer, you will champion operational excellence, building systems to tackle diverse technical challenges. We are a greenfield initiative, and you will translate business requirements into solutions that are both innovative and maintainable. You'll work with technology leaders to prototype, automate, monitor, and optimize these systems in production.
Key job responsibilities
As a Systems Development Engineer on the Global Edge Compute team, you'll build and maintain the platform that empowers Amazon to seamlessly manage our vast network of edge devices. Your work will focus on designing reliable systems, automating manual processes, and optimizing the management of devices worldwide. You'll collaborate with engineers across the team to tackle the unique challenges of operating at Amazon scale.
* Apply your technical expertise to resolve problems, creating robust and maintainable solutions.
* Drive team agility by optimizing design, automation, development, testing, and operational processes.
* Design and configure monitoring and alerting to proactively identify potential issues with our solutions.
* Identify and address risks in technical designs, making trade-offs to ensure both stability and innovation.
* Learn and adapt to Amazon internal builder tools and native AWS technologies to streamline device management.
* Troubleshoot issues effectively, identify root causes, and implement lasting solutions to minimize downtime.
This role has significant scope and can serve as a stepping stone to SysDE-II as an individual contributor if you're seeking growth and new challenges.
A day in the life
As a Systems Development Engineer, your days will be dynamic and filled with diverse challenges. You might start your morning reviewing system performance metrics, quickly spotting and addressing a potential issue that could impact our solutions. After collaborating with your team to resolve the problem, you'll join a design review session, offering your insights to improve a proposed device management solution. In the afternoon, you might focus on developing a script or tool to automate a manual configuration process, aiming to streamline operations and reduce tedious tasks. As your day wraps up, you'll test your tool, refine it, prepare documentation for the team, and discuss further optimization ideas with a senior engineer, brainstorming ways to enhance the reliability of our edge.
