What we need 

We are seeking an experienced SLAM expert leader to join our team. You understand the importance of fostering a strong team environment and the ability to develop trusting relationships with your team members. You are a creative and collaborative person who thrives in an agile development environment. This role manages a talented team of roboticists working on our Symbot mobile robot. Not only is high-level technical contribution expected, but the role also requires excellent communication and leadership skills, and the ability to collaborate in a highly cross-functional environment. 

What we do  

We are a talented team of roboticists working on the heart of Symbotic’s automation solution – Symbot, the mobile robot. We are responsible for delivering solutions for the storage and retrieval use cases performed in a fully autonomous structure operating 100s of Symbots at customer sites.  

What you’ll do 

• Building, motivating, and coaching a diverse team of roboticists and software engineers. 

• Managing multiple work streams with contributors both inside and outside the Perception team, taking responsibility for the timely execution and high-quality delivery of commitments. 

• Collaborating with other engineering teams on planning, design, and development for releases. 

• Using your technical skills to contribute to architecture and design discussions as well as code development and code reviews on all managed work streams. 

• Managing the day-to-day activities of approximately 4 to 8 engineers. 

• Manage both in house and outsourced software engineering teams. 

• Translate strategic objectives into tactical action plans and establish teams which can execute those plans. 

• Continue to build the team by hiring and onboarding new engineers and then cultivating their careers from there. 

What you’ll need 

• Minimum of 8 years of software development experience (design and implementation). 

• Minimum of 2 years focused on leading or managing teams. 

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related discipline. 

• Knowledge of Python and C++ coding and design patterns, suitable for real time environments. 

• Strong background in at least two of the following areas: computer vision, machine learning, localization and mapping, and data science. 

• Knowledge of real time or embedded operating systems and threading and communication issues related to real time operating systems. 

• Solid experience with software process and version control tools. 

• Expert level communication (oral and written) and documentation skills; must be comfortable explaining complex software systems and programming concepts. 

Our Environment 

• Up to 10% of travel may be required. Employees must have a valid driver’s license and the ability to drive and/or fly to client and other customer locations.  

• The employee is responsible for owning a credit card and managing expenses personally to be reimbursed on a bi-weekly basis.
