Are you a data analyst or  data scientist who thrives on exploration and solving commercial challenges? Join our Balancing Costs Team, where you’ll have the freedom to investigate, model, and innovate as we work to manage and reduce balancing costs in an increasingly complex energy grid.

 

This role can be based from Wokingham, Warwick, Glasgow or Cardiff, and we continue to offer hybrid working from office and home. We are open to full time and part time applicants, as well as flexible working arrangements.

 

 

 

About the Team:

We are a dynamic team focused on keeping balancing costs low. You'll play a key role in analysing trends, driving improvements, and using data science to inform strategic decisions that impact the UK energy sector. With an exploratory approach, you'll have the freedom to pursue your own investigations and uncover insights that drive our strategy.

 

Key accountabilities

  • Analyse and model large datasets using Python, SQL, and PowerBI to identify cost trends.
  • Lead exploratory data investigations to uncover commercial insights and actionable recommendations.
  • Create visually engaging dashboards and reports, providing strategic insights on balancing costs.
  • Collaborate across teams to enhance our balancing cost strategy using data-driven analysis.
  • Innovate and improve data processes, identifying opportunities for machine learning and advanced analytics.

Are not just data analysts— but data, analytical experts with a knack for data modelling, problem-solving, and driving commercial outcomes. You enjoy the freedom to explore data, test ideas, and develop innovative solutions. And in addition has the following:

 

  • Proven skills in data extraction, analysis, and modelling using Python, SQL, or PowerBI.
  • Experience working with large datasets, ideally within a commercial environment.
  • Strong communication skills, especially when it comes to explaining data insights and their commercial implications to stakeholders.
  • The ability to innovate and problem-solve with incomplete data.
  • Knowledge of data lakes (e.g., Azure) and experience applying data science techniques such as triage and predictive modelling.
  • Interest in the UK energy sector, with a desire to learn more about energy balancing costs and their impact on the industry.

 

Qualifications:

Minimum of a STEM or other numerical degree or relevant experience in data science, ideally within a commercial or energy-related environment.

About what'll get

A competitive salary between £51000 - £65000– dependent on experience and capability.

As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus based on company performance, 26 days annual leave as standard and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%.

About the National Energy System Operator (NESO)

In Autumn of 2024, the ESO transitioned to National Energy System Operator, or NESO for short. Previously denoted as the Future System Operator (or FSO), the new National Energy System Operator is the independent body responsible for planning Great Britain’s electricity and gas networks and operating the electricity system. 

The ESO, including all of its existing roles, are now at the heart of the new National Energy System Operator. As NESO, we will build on our existing roles, capabilities, and ways of working significantly to create an organisation the energy system and its users’ need. Our new capabilities will enable us to look across vectors, including electricity, natural gas and hydrogen, and crucially consider the trade-offs between them.

The organisation is set up as a public corporation with its own Board of independent directors, with complete operational independence from government, the regulator and any and all commercial interest. As was the ESO, NESO will be licenced and regulated by Ofgem through price control agreements and obligated to identify optimal solutions to system operations and planning in the most sustainable, affordable and secure way for all.
