The Cornell Ann S. Bowers College of Computing and Information Science (Cornell Bowers CIS) is a dynamic community committed to addressing global challenges. It houses three academic departments: Computer Science, Information Science, and Statistics and Data Science. What You Will Do:

This is a Contract College Position

Reporting to both the Chair of the Department of Statistics and Data Science (SDS) and the Associate Dean of Administration and Finance for Bowers CIS, the Director of Administration will direct the administrative service group that provides all administrative functions for the Department of Statistics and Data Science (SDS) a multi-college academic unit which is a collaboration with the Bowers Computing and Information Science (Bowers CIS),  College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) and the school of Industrial and Labor Relations (ILR) with total operating budgets and research expenditures of ~$10M annually.

Responsibilities/Duties

  • Areas of responsibility include personnel, finance and budget (including grants and contracts), facilities, academic program support, instructional and technology support, computer services, development, external communications and marketing, and alumni and corporate relations. 

  • Partner with chair, associate deans, academic/administrative directors and senior faculty to ensure effective administrative, academic and research leadership.

  • Serve as the decision-making authority on administrative matters within the department, advocating for the needs of faculty, students, staff and alumni as appropriate.

  • Provide expertise, guidance and judgement in decision-making and the interpretation of policies and procedures. Play a leadership role in development of new programs, implementation of innovative and effective interdisciplinary program management, and facilitation of changes in university systems, policies, and procedures in support of unique and non-traditional academic programs.

  • Serve as a member of the central college administrative leadership group, with responsibilities including setting direction for and leading college-wide administrative initiatives, identification and dissemination of best practices, representation of the college on university projects/committees.

  • Partner with the Associate Dean in the strategic development, direction and implementation of college initiatives impacting academic units.

  • Bachelor's Degree w/ minimum 5-7 years’ experience or equivalent combination of education and experience in business/administrative management and/or financial operations.

  • Excellent analytical skills.

  • Proven ability to establish and sustain effective relationships with all constituents.

  • Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and writing skills.

  • Effective change agent, leader, and mentor.

  • Must possess demonstrated success in effective decision-making, representing the departments and college professionally and ethically with tact, diplomacy and advocacy.

  • Self-starter.

  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse workforce, including faculty, staff, and students.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively allocate resources, interpret policy and manage competing priorities, as well as implement and foster outstanding customer-service.

  • Passionate about working in an organization that values and promotes diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging and wellbeing.

What We Prefer:

  • Effective financial management, budget preparation, and fiscal operations management in higher education is preferred.

  • Grant and contract management experience desirable.

  • Experience with capital planning, facilities and operational safety compliance.

  • This position is located in Ithaca, New York and will typically allow for the flexibility to work remotely 2 days per week at a location of employee’s choosing within the United States. The New York Convenience of employer guidelines require New York State individual tax reporting and withholdings for this position. Additional individual state income tax filings may also be required if working temporarily outside New York State.
