Navy Federal's Fair Lending Analytics team is second line of defense risk program within the Compliance & Public Policy division and is responsible for providing independent and effective challenge to models, business practices, and policies developed by business units across the organization to ensure compliance with fair lending laws. This is achieved via statistical analysis to identify and evaluate potential fair lending risk across the business.

The Data Scientist role will support the Fair Lending team’s review of models (including Machine Learning models) and policies to ensure they are fair. This includes conducting complex statistical analyses to test for bias, building and assessing alternative models/policies, and identifying and presenting findings to various stakeholders. This individual will work closely with various Navy Federal business units to provide oversight and guidance on the fair lending implications of business decisions. The role requires proficient data analysis and communication skills as well as an interest in consumer protection

  • Evaluate fair lending risks associated with models and policies by reviewing input data, assumptions, and by conducting statistical and analytical testing
  • Develop alternative models as necessary 
  • Leverage understanding of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) techniques
  • Create data visualizations and/or dashboards to monitor and explain fair lending risk
  • Collaborate with partners across first-line business units, Compliance and Legal
  • Provide subject matter expertise to recommend practical solutions to mitigate fair lending risk
  • Prepare and present clear, thorough reports to business units and executives explaining the analysis performed, results of the analysis and recommendations for improvement
  • Stay abreast of and incorporate the latest fair lending guidance from the regulatory bodies (e.g., CFPB) in Navy Federal’s program
  • Collaborate with team members and participate in team projects and initiatives
  • Utilize effective written and verbal communication to document and present findings
  • 2-3 years of experience in data analysis or statistics
  • Familiarity with federal fair lending laws, such as the Fair Housing Act and Equal Credit Opportunity Act
  • Programming, data modeling, simulation, and mathematics, especially in the area of Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence
  • Proficiency in SQL, R, Python, SAS, or another statistical programming language
  • Experience with data visualization tools such as Tableau and PowerBI
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Technical writing skills
  • Data storytelling and technical presentation skills (i.e., ability to explain statistical concepts to audiences of varying levels of technical knowledge)

  • Bachelor's Degree in Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Computers Science, Engineering, or degrees in similar quantitative fields

Desired Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of Fair Lending analytics experience in the financial industry
  • Master's Degree in Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or Economics
  • Familiarity with evaluating models for bias/fairness

Hours: Monday - Friday, 8:00AM - 4:30PM
