Replacement – Research Data Management Librarian

Responsabilities: The University of Ottawa Library seeks an innovative, motivated, and service-oriented Research Data Management (RDM) Librarian.The successful candidate will be a creative individual who works well with other colleagues in a challenging and changing environment.

Setting: The University of Ottawa is recognized nationally and internationally as one of the best research universities in the country and the largest bilingual university (French and English) in the world. Located on the unceded territory of Anishinabé-Algonquin people, in the heart of downtown Ottawa, it contributes significantly to the economy, culture and quality of life of Canada's Capital.

Duties: Reporting to the Head, Research Support, Scholarly Communication and Data, the Replacement RDM Librarian provides services that assist faculty and students in managing the lifecycle of research data resulting from research projects of all types. Working in an adaptive, team-based environment, the incumbent is responsible for a broad scope of work. This work includes evaluating and recommending online tools, systems and services that facilitate research data management throughout the entire research cycle.  Developing educational support for the stewardship of research data is a key aspect of this position. The incumbent is a member of an evolving organization that emphasizes service quality, innovation, and teamwork.

The Replacement RDM Librarian is responsible for the following work and activities, in support of the goals and priorities of the Research Services division and carries out these activities in a team-based environment, using their professional judgement and knowledge.

Work closely with colleagues to further develop library services relating to research data management across all disciplines, enabling faculty, students and researchers to better manage, describe, preserve, make available and potentially reuse research data.  

Promote best practices associated with research data management and provide guidance on issues and challenges related to research data. 

Provide in-depth consultations for individuals and groups on resources, services, best practices, and tools related to writing data management plans and managing research data. 

Participate in campus initiatives, such as committees and taskforces related to research data management and storage and the implementation of the uOttawa Research Data Management Institutional Strategy. 

Monitors development in research data standards and best practices and participates in discussions regarding cooperative research data curation and research data life cycle management activities and services at local, regional, national and international levels.   

Undertakes special projects or initiatives as assigned.  
 

Terms Replacement Librarian (January to December 2025) 

Wage:  Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.  The anticipated hiring range for this position would normally be Rank I or II ($69,576 – $132,649) (Based on 2021-24 APUO Collective Agreement; subject to change).

Skills requirements:

Education: A Master's degree in Library and Information Studies (MLIS) from an ALA accredited institution or equivalent.

Work experience:

  • Effective oral and written communication skills in both French and English.
  • Experience with the research processes used in one or more academic disciplines.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with practices for the curation, storage and preservation of data in a recognized data repository such as Borealis / Dataverse.  
  • Familiarity with common metadata standards and demonstrated understanding of database technologies.
  • Experience in the areas of teaching and research support.
  • Knowledge of research data management services, best practices, and relevant infrastructure such as the Borealis / Dataverse, DMP Assistant, and the Digital Research Alliance of Canada.
  • Collaborative, flexible, and collegial, with the ability to work in a team environment.
  • Problem solving and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to identify areas of opportunity and experience planning and implementing projects and services that are responsive to user needs.
