Job Description:

Position Summary:

In pursuit of Audubon's conservation mission, the Data & Technology team partners with programmatic and business teams across the organization to develop and deploy enterprise data systems and data-driven practices at the scale needed to achieve our ambitious goals.  The Lead Analytics Engineer will play a key role in developing and delivering data products and data integration and transformation processes using enterprise scale data resources to support conservation and operational objectives and advance our mission for hemispheric level bird conservation.

The ideal candidate will be a highly-skilled and self-motivated data professional with significant experience designing, implementing and supporting data analytics, data science and business intelligence products, workflows and processes. This role will work in close collaboration with colleagues across the National Audubon Society Data & Technology teams (Data Analytics; Data Engineering; Data Strategy and Measurement; and Enterprise GIS) and will support and partner with business teams across Audubon including Digital Products, Marketing and Communications, Development, Finance, Conservation (including Policy, Community Building, and Science), Equity Diversity Inclusion and Belonging (EDIB), and others.   

A successful candidate will have comfort and familiarity with a broad range of data analytics and data engineering tools and methods, as well as strengths in project management, change management, and communication among technical and non-technical stakeholders. This position reports to the Senior Director of Data Analytics and Reporting within the Audubon Technology team.

This is a hybrid position based in Audubon’s New York City or Washington, DC offices. We will also consider remote candidates within the United States.

Examples of initiatives that the position will support are:

  • Track and report the scale and depth of Audubon’s hemispheric conservation efforts; share results and insights to support internal program management and external storytelling about our work and impact.

  • Develop and deploy operational and reporting solutions to help Audubon grow and deepen engagement with millions of supporters, bird lovers and activists across the hemisphere, online and offline.

  • Collaborate with operational teams such as Development and Finance to build data capacity and maturity with business data analysts and executive leaders; act as a strategic advisor and hands on partner in identifying and act on opportunities to utilize our programmatic and operational data in innovative and robust ways to achieve our ambitious goals.

Compensation:

Salary range based on geo-differentials:

  • $120,000-$135,000/year = National

  • $135,000-$150,000/year = Alaska, CA (not San Francisco), Connecticut, D.C., Chicago, Oyster Bay, NY

  • $150,000-$165,000/year = NYC (not Oyster Bay), San Francisco, Seattle

Additional Job Description

Essential Functions

  • Compile, process, and analyze data of varying scales and sources, in order to produce derived data sources for analytics and reporting use cases

  • Partner with Audubon business teams to design and implement analytics data products and features to support data driven operations, data-driven decision-making, and data storytelling, including a range of operational, tracking and reporting, and strategic data uses and needs

  • Develop expertise in Audubon’s existing datasets and potential new datasets to identify opportunities to leverage them to support programmatic and operational goals

  • Partner with Data Engineers to design and implement data integrations and automations for analytics engineering processes, to ensure strong data governance, data quality, and operational efficiency in delivering data analytics and reporting products

  • Partner with Data Scientist to develop analytics engineering solutions for data science applications and use cases.

  • Provide subject matter expertise on data analytics and business intelligence engineering to the team and the organization.  Advise the Senior Director of Data Analytics, Director of Data Engineering, and the VP of Data and Technology, as well as others throughout the organization, on spatial analysis best practices.

  • Advise on the development of complex enterprise data products and solutions to large scale programmatic and business needs, including collaboration with internal and external experts.

  • Present findings to decision makers including c-suite executives as well as external audiences as appropriate.

  • Contribute to initiatives that improve Audubon's data governance, documentation, and data quality standards. Implements that guidance in practice with methodology documentation, metadata, code comments, etc.

  • Convey willingness and customer orientation to train users of varying backgrounds and skillsets to adopt and interpret analysis.

  • Collaborate with Audubon staff to ensure that equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging principles are incorporated and followed in all aspects of our work.

  • Travel two or more times a year to attend in person meetings and conferences.

  • Other job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Data Engineering, Data Analytics, Data Science, Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or related field preferred.

  • At least 7 years of experience as an Analytics Engineer, BI Engineer, Data Engineer, Data Scientist, or similar role. An equivalent combination of education and work experience will also be considered.

  • Substantial professional experience managing and creating data products, systems and processes to support data analytics, data science, business intelligence, or similar applications.

  • Substantial professional experience in data analysis, quality assurance/control, and experience working with large-scale, scalable data solutions.  Experience cleaning and working with messy, incomplete, or imperfect data.

  • Success in implementing data analytics and reporting initiatives in matrixed organizations.  Experience transforming how data delivers business value in large federated organization preferred.

  • Experience in designing and deploying business intelligence, reporting, decision support and data storytelling tools in conservation or other environmental or social issue spaces preferred.

  • Expert level experience coding in SQL, Python, and/or other coding languages for data engineering, data analytics and/or data science required.

  • Experience utilizing modern data infrastructure tools such as cloud data warehouses (Snowflake, BigQuery, etc), data integration tools (Fivetran, Airflow, etc), business intelligence tools (PowerBI, Sigma, etc), CRM systems (Salesforce, Everyaction, etc), and other enterprise data tools (such as Airtable) required.

  • Experience with marketing and engagement technologies and approaches, including omnichannel marketing platforms, social media analytics tools, web analytics solutions, customer data platforms, voter files and other person level data acquisition and targeting tools, policy and advocacy tracking tools, or similar strongly preferred.

  • Demonstrated experience applying technical coordination and project management best practices using tools such as Asana and Jira required.  PMP or other relevant certification preferred.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to non-technical audiences.

  • Excellent collaboration skills, with the ability to understand and apply product needs and requirements from a diverse set of organizational stakeholders, and to communicate effectively with non-technical collaborators.

  • Self-starter who can work as part of a virtual team and remain motivated in a dynamic environment.

  • Demonstrated experience preparing effective written materials, presentations, and other documentation and communication materials for internal and external audiences required.

  • Curiosity to stay on the cusp of software and product trends in non-profits and the greater tech industry.

  • Ability to travel at least two times a year.
