Co-Op/Intern Data Scientist Wanted 

We are seeking a Co-op/Intern Data Scientist to be part of our team during the fall.  Ideally, you have a passion for data science and machine learning, with a love of the ocean and robotics. 

As a member of the data science team, you will help take guidance from the lead data scientist to grow and maintain data science technology at Open Ocean Robotics. From training models for vessel detection and identification to using audio to detect marine mammals or human activity to understanding trends in oceanographic data (e.g. water temperatures and currents) and detecting anomalies, this position will participate many different forms of edge computing. This position will help improve current models, to solve some of our more challenging problems in the areas of computer vision, underwater acoustics, and ocean science. 

This role will use data science best practices to develop models and implement data processing pipelines. This includes cleaning and annotating data, training and evaluating the performance of models, and deploying the models on edge devices. 

Any experience with unmanned systems such as UAV, USV or other autonomous vehicles would be considered a bonus for your application. 

This is a position based in Victoria, BC. It is not a remote position. Open Ocean Robotics does not sponsor work visas. 

Requirements

Core responsibilities 

  • Help develop, operationalize, and refine a high quality, robust machine learning solutions to meet the use cases of key functional areas; e.g. 
  • Computer Vision - detection, tracking, classification 
  • Acoustics - detection and classification of marine mammals, marine vessels and other equipment 
  • Ocean / Operational Data - anomaly detection, streaming analytics, predictive analytics 
  • Participate in the development and enhancement of existing training sets and models 
  • Liaise with stakeholders to define use cases and deliver innovative solutions in order to help meet business and operational objectives 

 

 

Skills & Qualifications 

  • Knowledge of machine learning and deep learning tools and concepts 
  • Experience using one or more statistical programming languages (e.g., Python, R) to work with data sets 
  • Experience working with image / video processing in real world applications 
  • Good verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Positive attitude, reliable, self-motivated, team player with excellent communication skills. 
  • Knowledge of C/Rust is a plus 

 

Assets of Interest 

  • Background and understanding of unmanned systems such as UAV, USV or other autonomous vehicles. 
  • Experience with digital signal processing and/or audio processing 
  • Use of and understanding of AWS services that pertain to Machine Learning
