Company Description

Working at Boskalis is about creating new horizons and sustainable solutions. In a world where population growth, increase of global trade, demand for (new) energy and climate change are driving forces, we challenge you to make your mark in finding innovative and relevant solutions for complex infrastructural and marine projects.

Within a vibrant company culture you will be working as part of a diverse, international team of experts. We offer you the opportunity to realize your full personal potential and expand your professional career by creating new horizons. Together.

Job Description

The R&D department of Boskalis researches and develops work methods and tools for our dredging, offshore energy and salvage departments. A part of the R&D department is the data and digital team that explores and validates technologies in the field of computer science, AI, modelling, simulation, robotics and electronics. Our developments propose solutions for challenges related to working efficiently, ageing of our workforce, improving safety on vessels and projects and enhancing sustainability.

Examples of projects you can work on include:

  • Data driven business generation: how can we leverage news feeds and open source data to explore new business opportunities?
  • Modelling work processes: how can we improve first time right operations in areas such as rock dumping?
  • Reinforcement learning: how to best use these models to supplement physical modelling or real-time decision support systems?
  • Simulation and design of swarm robotics: how to simulate (in Gazebo / ROS2) turbidity plume tracking in space and time with robotic swarms? How to design and build a (single) swarm robot that measures environmental parameters?
  • Logistical simulation and optimizations: how to ensure efficient and optimal decision-support before and during execution of large complex projects?
  • (Underwater) image processing with machine learning: how to efficiently use machine learning techniques on videos to analyze material degradation?
  • Bio-inspired robotics in environmental challenging environments: how to adapt conventional or bio-inspired robots to move through and work in heterogeneous environments / soils?
  • Neuromorphic event-based camera navigation and positioning: how to use new and upcoming technologies to do complex operations more efficiently, faster, and for a fraction of the energy?

We have explored some of these or similar topics through proof of principles or proof of concepts and are ideal subjects for further investigation by interns or graduate thesis students. That is why we are looking for you.

Qualifications

You can make your mark as an intern or graduation student if you have:

  • A BSc in robotics, econometrics, mathematics, applied physics, or computer science and are well underway with your MSc in the same or similar areas;
  • A proactive attitude to integrate within the team and company. Next to that, it is very important to have a drive for curiosity and learning;
  • Experience with and a passion for both hardware and software development; for the latter we primarily use Python, of which you’ll need a proper understanding; experience with Docker, Kubernetes, PySpark or Databricks is not a must but a pre;
  • A good command of written and spoken English.
