What we're looking for 

We’re seeking enthusiastic students to join our Year in Industry program, specifically designed for undergraduates to immerse themselves into the STEM subjects they are most passionate about. The Year in Industry students will fill an important role in our Research & Development and Sustaining teams. 

This role is for a Data Scientist to join our Data Science Team in Bristol, UK. 

In this role you will work as part of a larger team to contribute to the delivery data science solutions for our new and existing scientific and industrial instrumentation products.   

If your application is successful, you will be welcomed into the team and experience a comprehensive induction program to help you get settled.  

We continue to support and develop our students by harnessing their skills, knowledge, and performance with in-house, on-the-job, and external training. Our Year in Industry students are empowered and encouraged to take on new challenges and experience a full variety of projects that form part of the everyday at Malvern Panalytical. 

Projects  

We will have 3 year in industry students in the data science team. Each will have a main project that they are responsible for. The projects involve applying machine learning techniques to different areas including:   

  • Characterising the morphology of samples from the light they scatter.   

  • Optimizing a specific step in the battery manufacturing process. 

  • Developing innovative approaches to light scattering, in combination with physical and computational modelling.  

What you will bring to the role:  

  • Creative thinking – design will be at the heart of this work. 

  • Curiosity and desire to learn – the projects are interdisciplinary. 

  • Develop and apply scientific theory 

  • Strong organizational skills to manage time effectively. 

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team. 

  • Desire to learn and apply Machine Learning to scientific domains. 

  • Experience of scientific programming (Python/Matlab/R or similar). 

  • Basic understanding of Machine Learning concepts and how to train and evaluate models. 

  • Develop innovative approaches to light scattering, in combination with physical and computational modelling

  • A Full-time position at Malvern Panalytical throughout your placement, of 37.5 hours per week. 

  • A competitive salary of up to £22,308.00

  • 25 days paid annual leave plus bank holidays.

  • You will work out of our Bristol office, based in a co-working space provided by DeskLodge.  

  • We offer flexible hybrid working and flexible hours

Entry Requirements 

  • Currently enrolled in a STEM degree (e.g. Maths, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science, Data Science etc.) that offers an Industrial Placement Year.  

  • Right to work and live in the UK for the duration of the placement.
