About the role

As a Senior Manager of Data Visualization Engineering, you will lead a team of talented four DVEs responsible for building and maintaining data visualization solutions that empower our product management and marketing teams to make data-driven decisions. You will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of data visualization at Zillow, driving innovation, and ensuring that our visualization tools are scalable, reliable, and user-friendly. You will be the primary partner with data engineering for ensuring data integrity, accuracy, and security while prioritizing the right data attributes and collections for reporting outcomes across product management and marketing needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage a high-performing team of data visualization engineers.

  • Provide mentorship and guidance to team members, fostering a collaborative and innovative work environment.

  • Set clear goals and expectations, and track team performance to ensure alignment with company objectives.

  • Ensure data quality and consistency across all visualization tools.

  • Oversee the planning, execution, and delivery of data visualization projects, ensuring they meet deadlines, budget, and quality standards.

  • Manage project resources, including team responsibilities, and timelines.

  • Monitor project progress and identify potential risks, taking proactive measures to mitigate them.

  • Define and implement the data visualization strategy and roadmap, aligning with the overall company vision and initiatives.

  • Stay up-to-date with the latest trends and technologies in data visualization, and evaluate new tools and techniques to improve our capabilities.

  • Collaborate with product managers, data scientists, marketing managers and other stakeholders to understand their data visualization needs and translate them into technical requirements.

  • Work closely with data engineering teams to ensure seamless integration of data products and optimized data retrieval for visualizations. Facilitate open communication channels with data engineers to maintain data accuracy, consistency, and availability for end-users.

  • Ensure that our visualization tools are scalable, performant, and accessible to a wide range of users.

  • Collaborate with data scientists to ensure that data is accurately represented and insights are clearly communicated.

  • Utilize user-centered information design concepts to build and deliver medium-to-high complexity dashboard projects, either independently or as part of a project team

  • Establish and maintain data governance standards and best practices for data visualization.

This role has been categorized as a Remote position. “Remote” employees do not have a permanent corporate office workplace and, instead, work from a physical location of their choice, which must be identified to the Company. U.S. employees may live in any of the 50 United States, with limited exceptions.

In California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, Nevada, New York, Washington state, and Washington DC the standard base pay range for this role is $177,100.00 - $282,900.00 Annually. This base pay range is specific to California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, Nevada, New York, Washington state, and Washington DC and may not be applicable to other locations.

In addition to a competitive base salary this position is also eligible for equity awards based on factors such as experience, performance and location. Actual amounts will vary depending on experience, performance and location.

Who you are

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, or a related field.

  • 9+ years of experience in data engineering or a related field, with at least 7+ years of experience in data visualization with experience in 2 or more visualization tools.

  • Proven track record of leading and managing high-performing data visualization engineering teams.

  • Advanced experience with visualization software, preferably Tableau, is required

  • In depth knowledge of interactive data visualization best practices

  • Experience leading design discovery meetings with end-users

  • Experience with data warehousing and data modeling concepts.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with stakeholders at all levels.

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.

  • Passion for data visualization and a commitment to delivering exceptional user experiences.

  • A track record of building and scaling data visualization platforms.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with a wide variety of data platforms (e.g., AWS, databricks, snowflake etc).

  • Familiarity in programming languages such as Python.
