The Chan Zuckerberg Biohub San Francisco (CZ Biohub SF) (https://www.czbiohub.org/sf/) is an independent nonprofit research institute that brings together three powerhouse universities - Stanford, UC Berkeley, and UC San Francisco - into a single collaborative technology and discovery engine. CZ Biohub SF itself supports some of the brightest, boldest engineers, data scientists, and biomedical researchers to investigate the fundamental mechanisms underlying disease and develop new technologies that will lead to actionable diagnostics and effective therapies. We are guided by our values of scholarly excellence; disruptive innovation; hands-on engineering/hacking/building; partnership and collaboration; open communication and respect; inclusiveness; and opportunity for all.

Our Vision

  • We pursue large scientific challenges that cannot be pursued in conventional environments
  • We enable individual investigators to pursue their riskiest and most innovative ideas
  • The technologies developed at CZ Biohub San Francisco facilitate research by scientists and clinicians at our home institutions and beyond

Diversity of thought, ideas, and perspectives are at the heart of CZ Biohub Network and enable disruptive innovation and scholarly excellence. We are committed to cultivating an inclusive organization where all colleagues feel inspired and know their work makes an important contribution.

The Opportunity

Come join an interdisciplinary team of biologists, data scientists and engineers!

The Intracellular Architecture group at the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub (https://www.czbiohub.org/leonetti) strives to map how the human cell is built by combining CRISPR, fluorescence microscopy, proteomics, robotics, software engineering and data science. We generate large reference datasets like OpenCell (https://opencell.czbiohub.org/) to define the intracellular organization of the proteome. Our science is fully open-source and published in high-impact journals (https://bit.ly/3T5Fbmf; https://go.nature.com/3rXOSae

Our work and others’ have shown how imaging the morphology of cells and their key components can reveal specific information about cell state and activity. We are seeking a Scientist - Cell Engineering for Cell-state Profiling to spearhead our next efforts to engineer libraries of cells expressing functional reporters, and to analyze imaging data to extract quantitative insights about cellular responses. This is an exciting opportunity to work at the leading edge of human cell biology, supported by experts in a highly collaborative and well-funded scientific environment. We bring together cell biologists, microscopes builders, image analysts and machine learning experts around team-science projects.

What You'll Do

  • Design and validate live-cell fluorescence reporters of functional responses
  • Lead high-throughput cell engineering pipelines in both transformed and stem-cell derived cell types.
  • Conduct image-based CRISPR screens
  • Partner with microscopy experts to quantify cellular responses and identify new cellular mechanisms
  • Partner with cell biologists and data scientists to build models of cellular state
  • Explain technical concepts to a multi-disciplinary team of biologists, bioengineers, and data scientists at the Biohub
  • Author publications & mentor junior colleagues

What You'll Bring

Essential –

  • PhD in Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Biophysics, or a related discipline
  • At least 5 years of expertise in tissue culture and cell engineering, including CRISPR
  • At least 2 years of experience in cell biology assays involving high-dimensional examination (ex: genetic screens, scRNASeq…)
  • At least 2 years of experience in live-cell fluorescence microscopy
  • At least 2 years of experience in quantitative data analysis (Python, R, etc…)
  • A deep knowledge of cellular signaling and stress pathways
  • A passion for research and understanding how cells work
  • An enthusiasm for team science and open science - this position will be embedded in a large multi-disciplinary team
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

 Nice to have -

  • Experience with primary cells or stem cells-based systems
  • Experience in machine learning and computer vision
  • Experience with network analysis

The Chan Zuckerberg Biohub Network requires all employees, regardless of work location or type of role, to provide proof of their initial COVID-19 vaccination by their start date. Those who are unable to get vaccinated because of a disability, or who choose not to be vaccinated due to a sincerely held religious belief, practice, or observance must have an approved exception prior to their start date.

Compensation

  • Scientist I =  $100,000 - $137,500
  • Scientist II = $112,000 - $154,000

New hires are typically hired into the lower portion of the range, enabling employee growth in the range over time. To determine starting pay, we consider multiple job-related factors including a candidate’s skills, education and experience, market demand, business needs, and internal parity.
