Your Role and Responsibilities
This job position is for IBM Japan.

Internship in basic research on game theory and machine learning

The Exploratory Mathematical Sciences Program at IBM Research focuses on topics in Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science, to advance our understanding of and leveraging these topics for strategic areas of Information Technology, such as Artificial Intelligence, Quantum Computing, Cloud Computing, and Security.

One of our current focus is “Game Theory and Machine Learning,” which aims to expand the range of applications of strategic decision making and mechanism design, traditionally studied in game theory, by incorporating machine learning approaches. We are seeking one internship student to accelerate the basic research on this topic.

The internship student will be expected to develop methods supported by theory and demonstrate their effectiveness through computational experiments. Therefore, the applicants should have deep expertise in at least one of game theory and machine learning, as well as an understanding of the other. Basic programming skills to implement a prototype of the proposed method is desirable, but a high mathematical background is more important. Note that although this research project is motivated by real-world applications, it does not provide experience in solving real-world problems with real data.
