Role Overview:

As a Data Operations Engineer at Planet, you will be responsible for ensuring the smooth operation, monitoring, and optimisation of data pipelines and systems across the organisation. You will work closely with Data Engineers, Data Analysts, and cross-functional teams to manage data flow, resolve issues, and maintain data quality and reliability. This role will involve automating workflows, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring data operations align with business objectives.

What You Will Do:

  • Monitor and Maintain Data Pipelines: Ensure the consistent flow of data through pipelines, identifying and troubleshooting any issues in real-time to minimise downtime.
  • Manage Data Infrastructure: Maintain the performance and reliability of data platforms (e.g., Snowflake, AWS, Azure), ensuring high availability and scalability.

  • Automate Data Workflows: Use automation tools (e.g., Airflow, dbt, Fivetran) to streamline data ingestion, transformation, and loading (ETL/ELT) processes.
  • Incident Management: Proactively manage incidents, resolving data-related issues efficiently and collaborating with relevant teams to prevent future occurrences.
  • Collaborate Across Teams: Work closely with Data Engineers, Data Scientists, and Analysts to support their data needs, ensuring the right data is available at the right time.
  • Optimize Performance: Continuously review and improve data operations processes, making recommendations for performance enhancements and cost optimisation.
  • Data Security and Compliance: Ensure that all data processes are aligned with security best practices and comply with relevant regulatory frameworks (e.g., GDPR).
  • Documentation and Reporting: Maintain clear documentation for operational workflows, incident reports, and system performance. Provide regular updates to stakeholders on data operations status.

Who You Are:

  • Experienced in Data Operations: Proven experience in managing and maintaining data pipelines and infrastructure in a dynamic environment.
  • Technical Expertise: Proficiency in SQL, Python, and cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, GCP, Azure) with experience in managing data platforms like Snowflake, Redshift, or similar.
  • ETL/ELT Knowledge: Hands-on experience with ETL/ELT tools such as Fivetran, dbt, Airflow, or other workflow automation systems.
  • Problem-Solver: Strong troubleshooting skills with the ability to quickly resolve data pipeline and infrastructure issues.
  • Attention to Detail: Highly detail-oriented with experience in data validation, quality control, and performance monitoring.
  • Collaborative: Excellent communication skills and a team player, comfortable working closely with engineers, analysts, and other stakeholders.
  • Security-Minded: Knowledge of data security practices, including encryption, access control, and regulatory compliance.

Nice to Have:

  • Experience with big data technologies (e.g., Hadoop, Spark).
  • Familiarity with real-time data processing tools such as Kafka.
  • Exposure to DevOps practices or CI/CD for data pipelines.
