Programme Background

  • SNV under the Water Sector with the support from the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands has started implementing a project titled “Transitioning to Sustainable Urban Water Cycles in Bangladesh. The objectives of this project is to support the local government and help improve sanitation, solid waste, drainage and flood management to protect the health and well-being of around 1.4 million people in 12 cities and towns by increasing access to safe, essential urban services. Moreover, this 5 years programme will improve relevant indicators at the city level resulting in enhanced municipality capacity and governance. 

Job Description

Context and purpose of the job

The primary purpose of the “Intern- Water Quality Data Analysis & GIS” is to support the analysis and understand the ambient water quality testing data of 12 cities, interpret and assist to find out the possible ways to improve the ambient water quality. S/he will also assist in GIS data analysis, spatial analysis, mapping and interpretation/report preparation as per requirement of component 6. S/he needs to extend the support to other components of SUWC project and Water Sector based on the requirement.

Assignment

1. Analysis of Ambient Water Quality Testing Data and Interpretation

  • Review and analysis of the ambient water quality testing reports (of 12 cities).
  • Prepare the interpretation of the water quality testing data
  • Find out the possible ways to improve the ambient water quality of the cities

TIme- 2 month

Output-12 Ambient Water Quality Profile Report for 12 cities

2. GIS Data Collection and Mapping 

  • Collect the cross-sectional areas data (by field measurement) of primary drainage system of Malni and Goali Chhara catchment. SCC Engineers will be assisted in this work.
  • Prepare cross-sectional profile of primary drainage system of Malni and Goali Chhara catchment
  • Prepare Geo-database and maps showing the cross-sectional profile

Time- 1 month

Output

  • Cross-sectional profile of Malni and Goali Chhara catchment (with geo-database).
  • Geo-database of and 2 maps showing the cross-sectional profile

The above list of tasks is not exclusive, and the position will be required to undertake any assigned responsibilities assigned by his/her supervisor as may reasonably be expected within the scope of the position.

Qualifications

Educational Requirements

  • Minimum bachelor’s degree in environmental science, Civil/Environmental Engineering, Urban Planning, Geography and Environment or related field from a university.

Additional Information

 Desired Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Competencies:

  • Minimum 1 year experience on environmental/water quality data analysis, GIS and remote sensing. Freshers may apply having excellent academic background, strong analytical capacity on environmental/water quality data analysis, GIS and remote sensing and interest to build career in water sector in the development field.
  • Strong abilities on writing in English and Bangla.
  • Ability to understand, analysis and interpret the water quality testing data
  • Skilled in data analysis, GIS, mapping, remote sensing and interpretation.

Duty station                       :    Sylhet City Corporation with visit to project sites (if required)

Reportable to                     :    Drainage and Flood Management Advisor 

Contract Duration             :    Three (3) months and can be extended depending on performance and availability of funds.

Expected Joining Date      :    As soon as possible.

Working Hours                  :    Full time (minimum of 40 hours per week)

Remunerations :    The monthly total remuneration package will be BDT 35,000/- (Salary 31,500, Travel Allowance 2500, and Mobile communication 1000). No other benefits are admissible.
