New York, NY

Description

We are looking for two postdocs or research associates to join our team at NYU, led by Prof Laure Zanna, and work at the interface between climate science and machine learning.

The successful applicants will perform research as part of the new multi-institution international project, M²LInES https://m2lines.github.io, supported by Schmidt Futures which aims to further our understanding of climate processes and to reduce climate model biases at the air-sea/ice interface, using scientific machine learning.

The main topic of research is to develop machine-learned models for ocean processes from outputs of high-resolution climate simulations and data-assimilation products. The scientific goal is to deepen our understanding of ocean mesoscale momentum, buoyancy and energy transport, in particular at the air-sea interface and to develop new mesoscale parameterizations for use in existing global climate models. For examples of our work in this area, see  https://tinyurl.com/6wcjxxfe;   https://tinyurl.com/yckwscu4https://tinyurl.com/3cu4c4pd

The successful applicants will join the M²LInES NYU team, currently composed of professors Joan Bruna, Carlos Fernandez-Granda and Laure Zanna, as well as multiple postdoctoral researchers, and graduate students.  The successful applicants are expected to actively collaborate across the entire M²LInES project. They will have the opportunity to lead research in an exciting new area and can take advantage of the unique intellectual opportunities afforded by NYU, and will have experience in working with researchers across different fields.

The positions will be for one year initially, with the possibility of renewal for up to 3 years, based on performance and availability of funding. The positions are available immediately.

Qualifications

  • Completion of a PhD in geosciences, physics, engineering, or a related field at the time of the appointment;

  • Strong background in physics or related field (e.g., climate science, physical oceanography, atmospheric dynamics) ;

  • Excellent scientific programming experience (e.g., Python);

  • Strong interest or background in the application of machine learning to physics problems;

  • A record of relevant publications in the peer-reviewed scientific literature appropriate to their career stage;

  • Ability to work independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team.

Application Instructions

Update July 25 2022: we have made offers to candidates but will continue to review applications in the event the candidates decline our offers. Therefore, upload your applications (updated details below) if you are interested in the positions. We close the advert as soon as the positions are filled.

For full consideration, applicants should submit the following via Interfolio:

  • a Curriculum Vitae with a list of publications,

  • a cover letter (no more than 2 pages) detailing their research experience, how their interests would fit the project advertise, their career plans, and available start date,

  • 3 names of willing to write a letter of recommendation (late letters will be accepted but should be received before interviews).
