Axalta Coating Systems is a $5 billion global supplier of automotive and industrial coatings. We are seeking a Color Instrumentation Scientist to join Axalta’s Global Color Technology team at our Global Innovation Center in Philadelphia, PA. The ideal candidate will have experience in a relevant technical field and a strong understanding of color instrumentation in industrial and laboratory settings.

The Color Instrumentation Scientist will develop and optimize color measurement instruments and techniques for the coatings industry. Candidates must demonstrate proficiency in color theory and its application in manufacturing environments. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills are essential, along with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams. Hands-on experience with optics, electronics, measurement hardware, and data management software is desired.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and validate advanced color measurement systems for coatings applications.
  • Conduct research on color theory, measurement technologies, and instrument calibration.
  • Measure and assess coating compatibility with lidar and radar sensors used in vehicles equipped with Adaptive Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).
  • Work with automotive manufacturers and refinish stakeholders to create internal guidelines for formulating radar-compatible coatings
  • Analyze complex datasets and derive actionable insights using data science best practices.
  • Collaborate with product development, manufacturing, and quality teams to integrate color science principles.
  • Develop standard operating procedures (SOPs) for color testing and quality control.
  • Lead projects from conception to implementation, ensuring adherence to timelines and quality standards.
  • Analyze color measurement data using Python, MATLAB, and Minitab to improve accuracy and efficiency.
  • Stay updated on industry trends in color science and coatings technology.

Specific Technical Requirements:

  • MS/Ph.D. in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science, Color Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in color measurement and instrumentation.
  • Understanding of color theory, color spaces, and color perception in coatings.
  • Proficiency in colorimetry, spectroscopy, and imaging technologies.
  • Experience with statistical design of experiments (DOE) and data analysis.
  • Proficient in data analysis and modeling using Python, MATLAB, and Minitab.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in developing and commercializing color measurement instruments.
  • Familiarity with industry standards related to color measurement in coatings.
  • Knowledge of additional programming languages or data analysis tools is a plus.

  • Ability to collaborate within a global team.
  • Results-oriented, creative, and a self-starter comfortable in a group environment.
