Overview

Senior Manager, Date Engineering Practice will lead the data engineering design, build, and implementation on MUFG’s Data platform. This senior role is critical in overseeing the end-to-end data engineering delivery and operational management of the MUFG’s internal and Client facing Data platform, ensuring it becomes a core driver of MUFG’s data monetization and technological transformation.  The Senior Manager, Date Engineering Practice will also lead the engineering capability uplift, focusing on CI/CD pipeline design and delivery, data ops, data quality, automation, regulatory data alignment to standards and guidance and reducing operational costs, while leading and developing a high-performing global team.
  Key Accountabilities and main responsibilities Strategic Focus
  • Data Orchestration Design & Implementation: Lead the development of MUFG’s Data Engineering practice, ensuring its scalability, security, and efficiency.
  • Data Ops Management: Oversee target state data eco-systems ongoing management, ensuring the data engineering aligns with business objectives and evolving client needs.
  • Data Monetization & Client Engagement: Develop and release new data functionalities to MUFG clients, ensuring the platform continuously innovates to meet market demands inclusive of Data Marketplace.
  • Data Engineering Capability Uplift: Lead and mentor teams to drive a culture of continuous improvement, focusing on automation, data quality, industry data products and operational efficiency.
  • Cost Efficiency: Reduce support overhead and drive down the unit cost of data engineering development and design capabilities, ensuring cost-effective solutions.
  • People Leadership: Lead distributed global team, fostering a positive and inclusive working environment, developing talent, and ensuring the team’s capabilities align with the company’s strategic goals.
Operational Management
  • Propose, document and implement changes to policies or procedures in line with technological advancements 
  • Assist in the development, maintenance, implementation and changes to the SLAs.
  • Monitor and identify any trends or irregular activities on jobs logged that could relate to potential IT issues and escalate appropriately.
  • Reviewing IT processes and procedures to ensure efficiency and simplicity for the business and meet control objectives as set out by GS007, ISO27001 and other financial industry regulations 
  • Provide knowledge, training and information support to enable self-service.
  • Set procedures and processes in line with standards within the IT Desktop environment.
  • Alignment to Regulatory guidance and standards (e.g. CPS230, CPG235 and GDPR)
  • Line manage and be responsible for the personal and technical development including appraisals and training plans 
  • Quality checking and auditing of work carried out by the team.
  • Manage and perform supervisory duties on a daily basis ensuring procedures and processes are adhered to.
People Leadership
  • Builds and maintains relationships with other IT leaders and business executives to develop an understanding of business needs 
  • Assists the assessment of external and internal technology capabilities required to achieve desired competitive positioning, maintaining currency of new technologies and platforms to provide direction on assimilation, integration and introduction of new technologies and capabilities 
  • Championing the team involvement in innovation efforts and roles, experimenting with new solutions to advance business opportunities, with the core driving a superior customer experience in technology, streamlining processes and enabling automation for ease of customer use 
  • Driving the development of efficient streamlined IT processes and performance metrics, across service and support operations, to ensure value in team deliveries and exceptional customer service.
  • Monitor team performance to ensure tasks are completed within agreed SLA time frames and agreed client specifications 
  • Encourage an environment of openness and information sharing within the team, by implementing regular communication processes 
  • Manage the performance of team members by developing performance agreements, coaching and providing regular feedback on performance, and completing performance management processes within agreed timeframes.
  • Lead a one team culture across IT partners and the business.
Governance and Risk
  • Ensure that the business priorities are communicated for all tasks under your lead 
  • Regular reporting to leadership on status of all tasks, projects and improvements including issue and risk mitigation solutions, in agreed timeframes.
  • Ensure that all requests from customers for assistance are handled promptly and effectively and if necessary escalated to the appropriate level
  • Alignment to Regulatory guidance and standards (e.g. CPS230, CPG235 and GDPR)
  • Data observability automation to scale data monitoring 
Experience & Personal Attributes
  • 15+ years of experience in data engineering and cloud migration in large, complex organisations.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Data Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field (required)
  • Preference for advanced qualifications, such as a PhD in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, or a related field.
  • Proven track record in leading data engineering capabilities and establishing centres of excellence.
  • Strong experience in automation, cloud computing, and data governance.
  • Preference for experience working with offshore capability centres of excellence, inclusive of migrations and driving global team collaboration and efficiency.
  • Expertise in driving complex technical transformations, decommissions and realising business outcomes through data and analytics.
  • Business product knowledge in Superannuation, Insurance, Managed Funds  and Registry Services highly desirable.
  • A healthy familiarity with a Financial Services & Technology environments 
  • A dynamic and exceptional business-mind with the ability to negotiate and influence senior level management, suppliers and key stakeholders effectively 
  • Sound understanding of frontline IT Workplace, Productivity, Customer Support, Infrastructure and Cloud Applications environments while implementing process improvements 
  • Strong business acumen and passion for current, new and emerging technologies to enable and rollout to the business to improve customer experience 
  • Implementation of frameworks and policies with the ability to measure 
  • Governance of IT End User Computing that drives transparency, operational stability, financial sustainability and productivity 
  • Identify and mitigate security risks and ensure IT security design and delivery 
  • Drive the onboarding and rollout of technology services according to the pre-defined roadmap 
  • Leadership experience with distributed teams, including global workforce coordination.
  • Exceptional skills in influencing and driving change across the organization 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills 
  • Strong in developing presentations and the ability to present and capture a wide variety of audiences 
  • Expresses ideas effectively in individual and group situations; uses and shares information resources effectively 
  • Ability to adapt communication techniques to suit the needs of different individuals 
  • Ability to priorities, organize and plan and to meet demanding deadlines 
  • Ability to lead a team through change and develop team members skills, while driving to achieve IT and Business goals 
  • Ability to make decisions in a timely manner based on the information, experience and skills available
