We have an exciting business improvement opportunity to work as a Team Member in our Water Quality Digital Services team as part of our Water Industry Regulation transformation programme.

The Environment Agency is undergoing modernisation of systems and IT infrastructure and moving towards Microsoft Azure cloud computing and Microsoft analytics tooling and technology such as Synapse Analytics, Fabric and PowerBI. This represents a new and exciting opportunity for the team to pioneer new ways to do reporting and analytics. To prepare for this challenge we are recruiting a Junior Analytics Engineer to support the development and deployment of data products and analytics tools to enable the Water Quality user community to efficiently leverage data from various sources and, in turn, better inform business insights and drive effective policy changes.

At this role level, you will:
• implement data flows to connect operational systems, data for analytics and business intelligence (BI).
• document source-to-target mappings.
• re-engineer manual data flows to enable scaling and repeatable use.
• write and manage ETL (extract, transform, load) scripts and pipelines and ensure the ETL processes perform optimally.
• support the development of business intelligence reports.
• support the development of analytical techniques. The team   The Water Quality Digital Services team sits within Water Regulation of the Environment Agency with the Environment & Business Directorate.

We steer the direction, set the priorities and shape our organisation's approach to delivering environmental outcomes and better regulation by providing digital and data services.

We work closely with colleagues across the Environment Agency, with Government, delivery partners and customers to help create a better place for people and wildlife and demonstrate value for money Experience/skills required   Applicant must have:
• Extensive experience of managing and analysing large sets of data from multiple sources to serve reporting and analytics needs and turning raw data into valuable insight.
• Experience in organising data in STAR schema data models that represent entities and relationships and support efficient data querying and analysis.
• Ability to construct ETL pipelines that integrate data from various sources.
• Proficiency in Python and R languages to build ETL processes.
• Knowledge of SQL Server database management and data warehousing.
• Ability to solve complex problems and formulate efficient and innovative solutions.

Desirable:
• An understanding of Azure cloud, Azure Data Factory, Azure Data Storage Lake Storage Gen2 and Microsoft Synapse Analytics.
• Experience of using Power BI to create reports to customer specifications.
• Experience in data visualisation and analysis.

You’ll have an EA Office base location, as a national role the working location is flexible / hybrid.

If a large number of applications are received, an initial sift using this lead capability may be conducted. Successful candidates will then proceed to a full sift or directly to assessment/interview. Feedback is generally not available at sift stage.

QUESTION: Provide an example of a complex ETL (Extract Transform and Load) process you built for specific reporting needs. Describe what tools/systems you used, the steps involved and how the data was modelled and served for onwards reporting.
