The team you'll be part of

Data and Devices Department @ Nokia Bell Labs
Nokia Bell Labs is the world-renowned research arm of Nokia, having invented many of the foundational technologies that underpin information and communications networks and all digital devices and systems. This research has produced ten Nobel Prizes, five Turing Awards and numerous other awards. The Data & Devices Department is part of the AI Research Lab, which has a long tradition of excellence in research and currently consists of more than 80 staff members with expertise ranging from computer science to experimental condensed matter physics.

We develop the physical devices and AI that will seamlessly integrate the physical world and human physiology into the future network of everything. We develop innovative materials, devices, and machine learning techniques that can continuously and non-invasively interface, sense, and actuate the physical world. We emphasize individual creativity and value both fundamental research contributions and advances that could potentially expand Nokia’s human-centric product offerings.

What you will learn and contribute to
With our Quantum Sensing team located in Cambridge, UK, you will contribute to cutting-edge technology research into vector magnetometry for magnetocardiography (MCG) applications. The fields associated with biomagnetism are very weak, many orders of magnitude smaller than the Earth’s magnetic field. Our team aims to build a cost-effective yet highly sensitive quantum magnetometry that can effectively detect and tracking these fields.

We work with a nitrogen vacancy centre in diamond system, which offers trigonal symmetry with four possible orientations in the diamond lattice. The resonance frequency of these NV centres therefore depends not only on the magnitude of the magnetic field, but also on the angle between the field and the NV axis, allowing for vector magnetometry.

We are looking for talented candidate to work with us on development of highly sensitive magnetometer (<1nT) for MCG applications. Interns will have the opportunity to: (1) improve magnetic field sensitivity by improving the physical readout method (pulsed mode operation, optimise optical paths, optical pumping etc..) and (2) design signal processing algorithms for magnetic field strength and direction extraction,

Education Recommendations
Currently a candidate for a PhD program in Physics, Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Nanotechnology, Computer Science, or related field.

What is Nokia looking for from me
It would be nice if you also had experience with:
•    RF Circuit design and RF Modelling (COMSOL and/or MATLAB)
•    Electronics and hands-on physical experiments
•    Condensed matter physics with coding experience (preferably Python) and extensive motivation in theoretical/computational modelling
•    Experience in optical or RF readout of NVD quantum resonances

Why we're awesome
Nokia offers flexible and hybrid working schemes, continuous learning opportunities, well-being programs to support you mentally and physically, opportunities to join and get supported by employee resource groups, mentoring programs, and highly diverse teams with an inclusive culture where people thrive and are empowered.

Company Culture: We believe our people are our greatest asset and we aim to foster a fun, challenging, positive, and inclusive work environment. We offer 1-on-1 mentorship, learning and development opportunities, global impact and interaction, and flexible work/life balance.

Meaningful Co-op/Internship: During your placement, you will be able to test the latest technologies and work on innovative projects that could leave a global impact.
