About your team: 

You’ll be working centrally within our mission control room, aka Centrica’s group functions. From Finance and Data Science, to our Wellbeing and People teams - this is the engine of our energy system, where our various Centres of Excellence power up each of our brilliant businesses, ensuring they have all the support, technologies, and capabilities they need to get our customers to Net Zero by 2050.

An opportunity to play your part – As a Platform Engineer at Centrica, you'll collaborate closely with senior engineers in the platform team to transform platform and service requirements into tangible code and operational solutions. This role is pivotal in translating complex needs into practical and reliable technological frameworks that propel the company forward. You'll be at the heart of developing the infrastructure that supports Centrica's innovative services.

The day to day –

  • Centrica is seeking a Platform Engineer who will be instrumental in enhancing our Big Data estate platforms. This role involves:
  • Championing industry-leading practices and methodologies to bolster the build and maintenance of our Big Data platforms.
  • Orchestrating and executing upgrades across our Data Services infrastructure, ensuring high availability and adherence to SLAs.
  • Collaborating with fellow Platform Engineers to develop resilient, scalable, and secure solutions that prioritize customer needs.
  • Engaging with diverse business stakeholders to deliver operationally sound solutions.
  • Assisting the Platform Engineering Manager in managing operational expenditure to align with financial objectives.

About you –

  • Champion operational excellence by implementing and enhancing Big Data platforms, ensuring compliance with best practices.
  • Assist operational teams in upgrading Data Services infrastructure, while maintaining service level agreements for Centrica’s Big Data Platform.
  • Foster a collaborative environment, partnering with fellow Platform Engineers to develop robust, scalable, and secure solutions.
  • Engage with a diverse range of business stakeholders to deliver operationally sound solutions, prioritising a customer-centric approach.
  • Contribute to financial stewardship by working alongside the Platform Engineering Manager to deliver systems and products within operational expenditure budgets.
  • Bring expertise in Big Data infrastructure within Azure and AWS environments, with solid knowledge of their data product suite, including Databricks, SQL Server, Azure Data Factory, and Redshift.
  • Utilise infrastructure build tools such as Terraform, and demonstrate strong proficiency in Python and Linux scripting.
  • Implement data platform solutions by leveraging continuous delivery and integration tools.
  • Exhibit proficiency in *nix systems, particularly open-source Linux distributions like Ubuntu, along with knowledge of Windows server builds and PowerShell.
  • Maintain a solid understanding of cloud networking principles to ensure seamless integration and functionality.
  • Demonstrate a passion for the continuous improvement of Big Data infrastructure solutions.
  • Operate as a self-motivated individual who is approachable, transparent, and maintains a positive attitude.
  • Hold a Bachelor’s degree in an engineering or software-related field, providing the technical and theoretical foundation required for the role.
  • Ideally possess a minimum of two years’ experience in SysAdmin, Operations, DevOps, or Site Reliability Engineering, showcasing a proven track record in maintaining and optimising complex systems.
