It is the world-renowned research arm of Nokia, having invented many of the foundational technologies that underpin information and communications networks and all digital devices and systems. The Semantic Reasoning & Understanding Department is part of the AI Research Lab, which has a long tradition of excellence in research and currently consists of more than 80 staff members with expertise ranging from computer science to experimental condensed matter physics.

Industrial metaverses in the AR space bring the promise to make work safer/more secure and increase the efficiency/throughput of industrial processes in the industry 4.0 enterprises. Recent advances in a wide range of technologies like computer vision, computational photography, neural rendering, scene reconstruction, computational imaging, visual-inertial odometry, sensor fusion for physical state estimation, mapping and localization, language grounding, interaction technologies, are set to achieve the goal of a safer/more efficient enterprises. In this context, the Semantic Reasoning and Understanding group at Nokia Bell Labs develops the fundamental algorithms and technological enablers in in the field of visual, inertial and radio-based localization, both in indoor and outdoor environments. We augmented our approaches by the semantic understanding of the environment in order to increase the accuracy and reliability of the localization. We build advanced semantic reconstruction of industrial and enterprise spaces towards building their always up-to-date digital twins. Finally, since in the context of the metaverse the human-machine interaction techniques are fundamentally transformed, we look at novel ways to interact with everyday objects in an AR metaverse. Next to the research angle our group performs development in the context of accelerating the transformation of AI-centered research proof of concepts into fully functional research prototypes, in the attempt to make them transferrable towards our business units.
Your responsibilities
As part of our team, you will contribute to applied research through:
- Close cooperation with top researchers in the areas of interest through daily interaction, representing a unique opportunity for continuous learning
- Learning and implementing state-of-the-art AI and computer vision algorithms
- Integrating and adapting AI models into research prototypes
- Participating in the creation of scientific papers, invention reports
- Presenting ideas/results from your activities to researchers, to the leadership team and to business units
Your skills and experience
General qualifications
- Enrolled in a PhD or MSc program in electrical engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics, or another related field
- Good theoretical knowledge in machine learning/deep learning technology fundaments
- Hands-on skills and proven record of experience with deep learning frameworks (Tensorflow, pytorch, keras or other)
- Hands-on skills on traditional Image/ video processing (e.g. using OpenCV or similar proven technologies)
- Ability to solve complex problems, analytical mindset, proactiveness and can-do attitude
Specific qualifications (would be nice to have any subset of the following):
- Experience with neural reconstruction (NeRF technologies and/or Gaussian splatting)
- Background and interest in semantic 3D reconstruction
- Experience with simultaneous localization and mapping, visual positioning, camera calibration
- Interest and skills in building /programming small robots
- Advanced rendering/image synthesis technologies
- Excellent software development skills, primarily in Python and C++
- Fluency in English, both written and spoken, excellent presentation skills
- Background and interest in reinforcement learning for autonomous agents
