Leidos is seeking a dynamic and experienced Data Scientist to contribute to government and commercial R&D projects, with a primary focus on algorithm development. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work on cutting-edge technologies, leading the way in advanced machine learning and complex data science applied to open-source intelligence.

As a subject matter expert, the candidate will guide data modeling, visualization, and analysis efforts while mentoring team members and providing strategic leadership on technical projects. Experience with the Department of Defense (DoD), DARPA standards, or similar environments is highly desirable, along with an understanding of intelligence operations and requirements.

Note- This is a part time position.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Problem-Solving & Execution: Break down high-level tasking into actionable work requirements and execute development efforts effectively.
  • Advanced Analytics: Develop and implement advanced machine learning algorithms and innovative data science solutions tailored to open-source intelligence requirements.
  • Communication & Reporting: Compile development results into various reporting formats and clearly articulate technical outcomes to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Tool Development & Maintenance: Serve as a principal developer to maintain existing tools and design new capabilities in response to evolving intelligence requirements.
  • Leadership & Oversight: Lead the execution of technical work while managing the programmatic aspects of the project, ensuring alignment with client goals and deliverable timelines.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Masters Degree and 10+ years of experience, or a Bachelors Degree and 12 + years of experience.
  • Possess a robust technical skill set across multiple programming languages, including Python for core data science and machine learning tasks, R for statistical analysis and advanced visualization, and SQL for database querying and management.
  • Proven ability to translate high-level objectives into detailed, actionable development plans.
  • Strong expertise in advanced machine learning, data science, and open-source intelligence research.
  • Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to present complex technical outcomes to diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated experience leading technical projects, managing both development and programmatic aspects.
  • Ability to design, develop, and maintain data tools that meet mission-critical intelligence requirements. 
  • Experienced in handling large datasets, such as managing over 500 million relationships in a graph database, while linking geospatial, temporal, and relational data for meaningful analysis.
  • Comprehensive understanding of open-source intelligence (OSINT) tools, ethical considerations, and the ability to align findings with client needs, particularly in defense and commercial settings.
  • Strong analytical and communication skills are essential to distill complex findings into clear, actionable reports for diverse audiences.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with Neo4j and its Cypher query language is essential for graph database operations, alongside tools like Elasticsearch for data indexing and retrieval.
  • Expertise in big data frameworks such as Hadoop or Spark will be advantageous for processing large-scale datasets efficiently.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in natural language processing (NLP) techniques, including named entity recognition, sentiment analysis, n-gram analysis, and tokenization.
  • Experience with multilingual data analysis, particularly in Russian, Arabic, Chinese, and English, is critical, leveraging libraries such as NLTK, spaCy, and Hugging Face’s transformers.
  • Advanced visualization skills using Tableau, Power BI, Matplotlib, or Seaborn will enable the creation of compelling data-driven reports for both technical and non-technical audiences.

Pay Range (US Only): $122,200 - $188,000 - $253,800
