STARS is looking for an ambitious and skilled Data Architect to join our IT team who will play a key role in leading STARS' journey towards Data Maturity. This is a hybrid role that will require periodic attendance at one of our bases.

Is this challenge for you?

The Data Architect is responsible for designing, creating, deploying, and managing STARS’ data architecture. Working closely with a small core Data Team, internal stakeholders, and external partners, your key result is data that is accessible and easy to use, secure, accurate, and reliable. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in data warehouse design, data modeling, database design, and Master Data Management (MDM). On a daily basis, you will work on building out STARS’ data warehouse, and advise on architecture improvements to STARS source data systems, which are used on the frontlines to dispatch emergency services and deliver critical  care, anywhere.

Do you have what it takes?

  • Understand cross-organizational needs to inform decisions with data, and lead the design of effective, efficient data solutions.
  • Develop and implement a data architecture that supports STARS’ goals, focusing on data accessibility, security, accuracy, and reliability.
  • Work closely with IT teams to understand technical infrastructure and capabilities, ensuring that data architecture aligns with future-looking IT strategy.
  • Identify and design process improvements for optimizing data ETL (Extraction, Transformation, and Loading) from multiple STARS data sources
  • Advise and help the Data Team create solutions to automate manual reporting processes.
  • Produce and maintain comprehensive Solution Design documentation, detailing the architecture, components, and integration points of data systems, ensuring clarity and alignment with business and technical requirements.
  • Migrate data from legacy systems to new architecture by designing robust data migration strategies.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to define and track key metrics or KPIs.

What do you need to be successful in the role?

We recognize that not all candidates come from the same experience and path; the following is our ideal list of qualifications, but we’d be happy to hear from you even if you don’t check every item on this list.

  • In-depth understanding of data warehousing principles is crucial. This includes experience with data modeling, ETL and data manipulation, and data visualization options.
  • Track record of acting efficiently and quickly to create strong results with a small team.
  • Proficiency in using a diverse range of data transformation and data warehousing tools, for example: SQL, data build tool (dbt), Spark, and platforms such as Microsoft Fabric, Databricks, and/or Snowflake.
  • Experience in building required infrastructure for optimal extraction, transformation, and loading of data from various data sources.
  • Knowledge of data governance and data security practices.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills are key, along with strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Proven ability to work with technical and non-technical stakeholders, to support their data infrastructure needs and assist with data-related technical issues.

The ideal candidate also may have:

  • Experience with data mining and segmentation techniques
  • Experience with cloud-based data solutions.
  • Experience managing workstreams using Agile methodology, including leading scrum meetings, coordinating with cross-functional teams to ensure timely delivery of data results, and continuous improvement of processes.

Experience and Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or equivalent combination of education, training, certification, or experience
  • 7 or more years of experience as a Data Architect or in a similar role.
  • Certified Data Management Professional (CDMP) or similar certification can be an added advantage.
  • Experience with advanced data platforms such as Fabric or Databricks, demonstrating the ability to leverage these technologies for efficient data processing, storage, and analysis.
  • Experience in utilizing T-SQL and PySpark for complex data manipulation, transformation, and analysis.
  • Managing data transformations in organizations (change management; cross-org data alignment, etc.)
  • Experience in data visualization, demonstrating the ability to create insightful and actionable visual representations of data to support business decision-making.
  • Expertise in developing and managing semantic models in PowerBI.

What we offer!

We offer a competitive salary based on education and experience, as well as excellent organization-paid health and dental benefits, free parking and so much more.  More importantly you will be a key member of the STARS organization and a link in our ability to execute our mission of saving lives safely within the chain of survival.
