Job Summary
The Enterprise Data Architecture Director is a key leadership position that is at the center of IEEE's data and technology transformation.
This role leads the design and execution of IEEE's modern data strategy. As a vital member of the Enterprise Data team, this role will collaborate with Data Product Owners, Architects, Data Scientists, Data Engineers, Consultants, and end-users to reimagine, design, and build the next generation of hybrid cloud and on-premises data solutions using cutting-edge technologies like AWS, APIs, and AI to support data-driven decision-making, optimize operational efficiency, and foster innovation.
The role will make strategic architecture decisions that shape our enterprise data products, enabling the organization to achieve its future-state business capabilities and target architecture. Additionally, they will be responsible for evaluating existing data pipeline architectures, enhancing foundational elements, participating in product ideation, and providing recommendations for technology stack improvements. Additionally, Data Architecture plays a crucial role in governing the implementation of data standards and policies, ensuring compliance with data protection regulations.
The role reports to the Chief Data Officer. This position works under consultative direction, making independent technical and personnel decisions, in collaboration with the CDO and other department managers to set priorities and align work across the group. The role is a key member of the Enterprise Data & Analytics IT Leadership. The position will have a minimum of 3 direct reports.
Key Responsibilities
Specific duties include but not limited to:
- As a senior member of the IT Data & Analytics team, contributes to the overall strategic vision for Enterprise Data & Analytics.
- Designs, architects, and leads the building of enterprise modern scalable data platforms
- Leverages various AWS cloud components & tools, 3rd party tools, and custom-built in-house tools to meet strategic and tactical goals.
- Provides architectural, engineering, DevOps, and CI/CD expertise and leadership to engineering, development, application architecture, and consulting teams.
- Act as the Subject Matter Expert for Testers, Developers, and Business Users in the area of Data solution functionality;
- Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders to understand their Data needs and business goals, transforming them into actionable data actions;
- Provides continuity in all major data enterprise solution decisions
- Takes ownership of the design and development of the overall data ecosystem architecture
- Outlines the future direction of our Data products
- Redesign data architecture to fit new product needs
- Maintains knowledge of other data initiatives within the IEEE to leverage the company's efforts
- Coaches developers, engineers, and architects in solution design; ensure component re-use
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, or similar discipline (Req.)
- Master's or other advanced degree (Pref)
Work Experience
- 15-20 years Data engineering experience and recent hands-on experience desired
- 10-15 years hands-on experience as a Solution Architect, Enterprise Architect, or Principal Data Architect for large-scale enterprise solutions, with a strong focus on agile practices.
- 10-15 years Data modeling, data warehousing and data quality management
Skills and Requirements
- Extensive experience in Data Architecture, Cloud Solutions, emerging technologies, Big Data, Data Modeling, Data Warehousing, and Business Intelligence.
- Experience with data governance, data cleansing, data mining, and transformation techniques is a plus
- Proven ability to design and implement data architectures that define and deliver data as a product.
- Deep understanding of modern data architecture, including experience with data lakes, data warehouses, data marts, relational and dimensional modeling, data quality, and master data management.
- Strong background in Operational Data Stores, Dimensional Modeling, and supporting application data architecture. Experience with Oracle, Postgres, MySQL, and understanding of best practice architectural concepts for relational data models.
- Experience in designing, deploying, and evaluating tools, frameworks, and patterns for scalable data platforms.
- Experience with database technologies for both structured and unstructured data, ensuring optimal storage and retrieval.
- Proficient in cloud architecture and best practices, particularly with AWS Cloud tools such as Amazon RDS, Redshift, AWS DMS, AWS Glue, Amazon S3, AWS Lambda, and more.
- Expertise in overall solution architecture for data platforms built on the cloud.
- Familiarity with relevant code repository and project tools like GitHub, JIRA, and Confluence.
- Detail-oriented with strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
