Our flagship campus is in Sydney. We also have a campus in Melbourne and co-working spaces in Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide. But you have choice in where and how you work. That means if you want to do your thing in the office (if you're near one), at home or a bit of both, it's up to you.

Job Description

About the team

The Visual Suite Platform (VSP) Team is the bedrock of backend and machine learning support for the feature work done across our visual work suite products. There will be 20+ engineers in this team across both backend and machine learning, and will take on a steady mix of project work from our on-going roadmap, as well as the maintenance of our evergreen services.

While we have shipped world class products, there is still much to be done. We have a packed upcoming schedule of features that will take the Visual Suite to new heights. Expect a strong focus on both AI/ML integration, interactivity, and other power user features.

About the role

As a Senior Engineering Manager, you'll work closely with leaders across specialties, teams, and groups to set a vision, and rally teams to deliver it. You'll develop & implement strategies that take advantage of our teams strengths to maximise efficiency and velocity. You'll invest in the people around you and scale to support one of Canva’s key strategic areas.

Qualifications

As Canva scales change continues to be part of our DNA. But we like to think that's all part of the fun. So this will give you the flavour of the type of things you'll be working on when you start, but this will likely evolve.

At the moment, this role is focused on:

  • Working with senior & staff level engineers to get a deep understanding of the problem domain
  • Build alignment & momentum towards a common goal across teams, groups, and timezones
  • Partnering with product and design for road mapping, planning resourcing and goal setting. Taking the vision of the product and making it happen
  • Grow a team vertically & horizontally - invest in our people & add new ones
  • Creating a collaborative & open team environment, where everyone can do the best work of their lives
  • Keeping situational awareness across multiple complicated workstreams & keeping the broader company informed.
  • Connect the dots from now to our long term product vision
  • Ruthlessly prioritise - keep us focused on the critical problems, and keep the noise away.
  • Design, develop and deploy solutions and hands-on software development – working closely with leads, designers, and product managers to deliver features and experiments to our customers worldwide
  • Facilitate knowledge sharing and optimally advocate for engineering needs
  • Models initiative and ownership in achieving goals, improving processes and solutions
  • Finds opportunities for cross-team collaboration to work on new insights and improvements that help achieve our goals

You're probably a match if you have:

  • Proven success people leading multiple squads of engineers, including team leads
  • Ability to run multiple streams of work, rallying a wide range of people, teams, and groups across the organisation towards a common goal
  • Balancing short-term pragmatism with a steadfast commitment to building the right thing for our long-term goals.
  • Track record of empowering other leaders and building a diverse team, while growing future leaders
  • Experience delivering a product from early stages to a full launch in a tightly constrained environment
  • You have experience working in large distributed cloud environments (ideally AWS)
  • Commercial experience in a software development environment, ideally with experience in building internal/external SDKs or APIs. Our backend stack consists of Java & Python, depending on the needs. Experience in either or both would be a bonus, but not required.
  • Firmly grounded computer science and engineering fundamentals including asynchronous programming, data structures, solution design, architecture, and design patterns.
  • Passion for performance debugging and benchmarking
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
