A Day in the Life of a Communications and Signals Intern
As an intern working with the Communication and Signals (C&S) team, you will assist design engineers and staff on a variety of projects.
Trending and analysis of C&S systems, the design and commissioning of C&S equipment and systems, accuracy verification of database resources used to regulate train dispatching systems, revisions to electronic drawings and schematics, research planning and deployment of new technology, and other duties. Interns may also travel to field locations to gain a better understanding of Norfolk Southern and learn how the work they are doing fits in.
What Makes a Successful Intern?
• Must have knowledge and operational skills in electronics combined with competency in computer software applications - knowledge of Windows, Access, Excel, and Word is preferred
• Willingness to travel and work outdoors is required, as well as a willingness to work extended hours when situations dictate
• General hands-on knowledge of electronic equipment with good troubleshooting and problem solving skills is helpful

Pursuing a Bachelor’s/Master’s Degree

Norfolk Southern is seeking a Fuel Data Analyst Intern to join our Fuel Management System Program, a key initiative focused on transforming and streamlining the entire fuel lifecycle process. This includes everything from fuel purchase and receipt, to delivery to locomotives and fuel consumption in trains. In this role, you will act as a change agent, delving deep into the details of our processes, from physical infrastructure and inventory management to fuel efficiency data analysis for our fleet. You will be an integral part of the team working to document existing processes and contribute to the redesign and optimization of tools that support the fuel lifecycle at Norfolk Southern.
Key Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand and document current fuel management processes.
- Analyze and assess fuel efficiency data across the locomotive fleet.
- Contribute to the design and implementation of new processes and optimization tools to streamline fuel lifecycle operations.
- Assist with user acceptance testing (UAT) of new software tools, ensuring that they meet business requirements.
- Support the improvement of inventory management and reconciliation processes related to fuel.
- Design and document new, more efficient workflows for fuel purchase, receipt, delivery, and consumption.
- Leverage data analysis tools like PowerBI, Excel, Power Apps, and SAS to create actionable insights for process improvement.
- Participate in process redesign discussions, bringing fresh ideas and perspectives to the table.
Qualifications:
- Pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, with a focus on data science or technical analysis.
- Strong understanding of mechanical infrastructure and systems, particularly in the context of fuel management.
- Solid technical data skills, including proficiency with PowerPoint, Power Apps, Excel, and PowerBI. Knowledge of optimization tools (e.g., SAS) is a plus.
- Familiarity with user acceptance testing (UAT) processes and ability to communicate technical details clearly.
- Strong ability to design and document new processes effectively.
- Ability to work with a diverse team and contribute to collaborative problem-solving.
